Can an “enigmatic” and seemingly “incoherent” text suddenly acquire meaning and a deep underlying logic? A recent study argues that the problem is not the text—it is the interpretive lens through which we approach it. Devin Arinder and Ernest van Eck combine cognitive linguistics with the study of ancient patronage and benefaction and propose a new reading of this early Christian text. In this patron-client framework, salvation is understood as a benefaction that calls for a response, with the horizon of judgment and final vindication. The authors argue that only with the appropriate conceptual framework can the text’s semantic coherence become clear.
The article offers an original application of cognitive linguistics to a text from the Apostolic Fathers and advances a fresh interpretation. Still, one may ask whether restricting the analysis to a single lens—namely the patron/benefactor and client/beneficiary relationship—does justice to the text’s possible complexity, and whether, as a result, important theological dimensions or rhetorical strategies may be overlooked. Moreover, if we were to accept chapters 19–20 as authentic (something the authors do not accept), how would that affect the analysis and the article’s final conclusions?
