Το κάλυμμα του Μωυσή: Έξοδος 34 και Β΄ Κορινθίους 3 / The Veil of Moses: Exodus 34 and 2 Corinthians 3

[ENG]

A recent article by David Frankel on TheTorah.com ("Moses’ Radiant Face: Holiness Unveiled") returns to one of the most striking episodes in the book of Exodus: the face of Moses that radiated after his encounter with God, so that Moses covered it (Exod 34:29–35) lest the Israelites be afraid. This is a passage with a long history of interpretation, in both Jewish and Christian tradition. The interest of the article lies not simply in the repetition of well-known observations, but in the effort to bring to light the internal tensions of the narrative and to raise anew the question of its literary and theological redaction.

Frankel notes that the present form of the text is not entirely smooth as a narrative. Moses does not immediately cover his face upon descending from the mountain; he first addresses Aaron, the leaders, and then all the Israelites with his face uncovered. Only after completing his speech does he place the veil over his face. At the same time, the radiance of his face appears here, after the reception of the second tablets, even though Moses' intimate relationship with God has already been described in previous chapters. The second tablets are mentioned here and then nothing more is said about their fate. Finally, in vv. 34–35 Moses enters the Tent of Meeting to converse with God, yet the Tent has not yet been constructed. According to Frankel, these elements suggest that the passage bears traces of redaction and that it is likely connected to an older non-Priestly tradition, which was subsequently incorporated into its present context.

The narrative of Exod 34 is also taken up by Paul in 2 Cor 3:7–18. There Paul uses the image of the veil to contrast two ministries: that of the old covenant (which "is being abolished") and that of the Spirit which Paul serves. However, he does not simply reproduce the narrative of Exodus. He rereads it, restructures it, and incorporates it into his own argument concerning ministry, glory, and the Spirit. There is no need to assume that he knew a different form of the text. It is more likely that he knew essentially the same form as has been transmitted and that he interprets it freely, in accordance with his own theological purposes. The Pauline reading is therefore a new interpretive act, which shows how Scripture remains open to new theological appropriations.

Frankel's article is, therefore, of particular value not because it definitively resolves all the problems of Exod 34, but because it reminds us that the biblical text itself is often more complex than we assume. And 2 Cor 3 shows us that this complex texture of Scripture never ceased to generate different interpretations, already from antiquity. Moses' radiant face and his veil thus remain a meeting point between the composition of the text, the theology of divine presence, and its later interpretive life.
