Οι οσμές διαδραματίζουν πάντοτε σημαντικό ρόλο στη ζωή των ανθρώπων και στους ανθρώπινους πολιτισμούς. Λίγοι όμως τέτοιοι πολιτισμοί του παρελθόντος κατόρθωσαν να τους αποτυπώσουν στα μνημεία τους. Μέλισσες σε αρχαία νομίσματα / Bees on ancient coins

Οι μέλισσες ήταν πάντοτε σημαντική για την ανθρώπινη ζωή και το μέλι της χρησιμοποιήθηκε ως τροφή και φάρμακο με μαγικές ιδιότητες. Δεν προκαλεί, λοιπόν, έκπληξη ότι το μικρό αυτό έντομο εμφανίζεται συχνά σε νομίσματα των αρχαίων ελληνικών πόλεων της Ελλάδας και τη Μ.Ασίας. Σε σχετικό δημοσίευμά του το National Geographic ενημερώνει για την εξέταση του γενετικού υλικού που εντοπίστηκε στο νεκροταφείο της Ashkelon κατά τις πρόσφατες ανασκαφές εκεί. Τα ευρήματα φαίνεται να επιβεβαιώνουν την άποψη των αρχαιολόγων ότι οι Φιλισταίοι ήρθαν στην περιοχή από τη νότια Ευρώπη, ίσως από Ελλάδα, Κρήτη, Σαρδινία ή την Ιβηρική χερσόνησο. Πρέπει να εγκαταστάθηκαν στην περιοχή κατά το 12ο αι. π.Χ., γρήγορα όμως αφομοιώθηκαν από τον τοπικό πληθυσμό:
