Η μελέτη αυτή εξετάζει συστηματικά τη γλωσσική επίδραση της εβραϊκής στα αραμαϊκά κείμενα από το Qumran. Αναλύονται ένα ευρύ φάσμα κειμένων—από το Απόκρυφο Γενέσεως και τις Διαθήκες Πατριαρχών έως τα αραμαϊκά τμήματα του Ενώχ και των targumim. Πρόκειται για μία αξιόλογη συμβολή στην κατανόηση της γλώσσας του Ιουδαϊσμού του Δεύτερου Ναού και της πραγματικότητας της διγλωσσίας των κοινοτήτων που παρήγαγαν αυτά τα κείμενα.

The academic publisher Universitätsverlag Winter (Heidelberg) has made available in open access the monograph by Christian Stadel, Hebraismen in den aramäischen Texten vom Toten Meer (Schriften der Hochschule für Jüdische Studien Heidelberg 11, 2008). This study systematically examines the linguistic influence of Hebrew on the Aramaic texts from Qumran. A wide range of texts is analyzed—from the Genesis Apocryphon and the Testaments of the Patriarchs to the Aramaic sections of Enoch and the Targumim. This is a valuable contribution to understanding the language of Second Temple Judaism and the bilingual reality of the communities that produced these texts.

Πόλεις ή οικισμοί; Η βιβλική ορολογία υπό το φως της αρχαιολογίας / Cities or Settlements? Rethinking Biblical Terminology Through Archaeology

 Στη σελίδα Bible History Daily μπορείτε να διαβάσετε την ανάρτηση του John Drummond, “Cities in the Bible”, στην οποία παρουσιάζει το ενδιαφέρον άρθρο του John W. Herbst, “Big City, Small Town—Why Size Matters” (BAR Winter 2025). Το άρθρο θέτει  ένα θεμελιώδες ερμηνευτικό ζήτημα: η εβραϊκή λέξη עִיר χρησιμοποιείται για κάθε είδους μόνιμο οικισμό, από το μικρότερο χωριό έως τη μεγάλη μητρόπολη. Όταν οι μεταφράσεις αποδίδουν συστηματικά τον όρο ως «πόλη», δημιουργούνται εύκολα παραπλανητικές εντυπώσεις για την κλίμακα και τη σημασία των βιβλικών οικισμών· ενδεικτικά, αρχαιολογικές/δημογραφικές εκτιμήσεις υπολογίζουν τον πληθυσμό της Ιερουσαλήμ (στο απόγειό της) στους 12.000–25.000 κατοίκους, ενώ της Δαν περί τους 5.000. Το άρθρο συνδέει την παρατήρηση αυτή και με το πρόβλημα των αριθμών (π.χ. οι 28.600 “πολεμιστές” από τη Δαν στο Α΄ Χρον. 12:35), και σημειώνει ότι το אֶלֶף ίσως καλύπτει ευρύτερο σημασιολογικό φάσμα (π.χ. στρατιωτικές μονάδες ή τους επικεφαλής τους· πρβλ. אַלּוּף). Έτσι, η αρχαιολογία μπορεί να λειτουργήσει διορθωτικά στη μετάφραση και στην ερμηνεία, βοηθώντας να αποφεύγονται αναχρονισμοί στην ανάγνωση των κειμένων.

Τελικά, η συζήτηση υπενθυμίζει ότι η αρχαιολογία δεν "επιβεβαιώνει" απλώς το κείμενο, αλλά συμβάλλει στη λεπτότερη κατανόηση της γλώσσας και των μεγεθών που προϋποθέτει, περιορίζοντας αναχρονισμούς στη μετάφραση και στην ερμηνεία.

On the Bible History Daily website, you can read John Drummond's post, "Cities in the Bible," in which he presents John W. Herbst's interesting article "Big City, Small Town—Why Size Matters" (BAR Winter 2025). The article raises a fundamental hermeneutical issue: the Hebrew word עִיר is used for every kind of permanent settlement, from the smallest village to the large metropolis. When translators systematically render the term as "city," they create false impressions about the size and significance of settlements. Archaeological evidence reveals that Jerusalem at its peak had 12,000-25,000 inhabitants, Dan approximately 5,000, while fewer than 20 Israelite settlements exceeded 1,000. The article also connects this observation with the problem of numbers (how could 28,600 warriors from Dan join David's army?), suggesting that the word אֶלֶף perhaps covered a broader semantic range that could denote military units or military commanders (cf. אַלּוּף). This is a characteristic example of how archaeology can help us avoid anachronisms in reading texts and functions correctively in translation and interpretation.

Ultimately, this discussion reminds us that archaeology does not merely “confirm” the text; rather, it contributes to a more nuanced understanding of the language and the scales presupposed by it, thereby limiting anachronisms in translation and interpretation.

Avigail Manekin-Bamberger, "Who were the Jewish ‘magicians’ behind the Aramaic incantation bowls?" 235-254

This article focuses on the social and professional contexts of the producers of Jewish Aramaic incantation bowls. Based on the vast amount of legal terminology deployed in the bowls, as well as a reference to bowl writers as ‘writers of books’ in bowl AMB6, I argue that bowl scribes were part of a professional guild of scribes (soferim) that engaged in a variety of forms of Jewish writing. Furthermore, I suggest that the scribal context of the practitioners of the magic bowls was different from the professional context of the contemporaneous corpus of Jewish metal amulets. Identifying the unique Sitz im Leben of the bowls reveals that for Jews in Sasanian Babylonia the line between magic, law and religion was not rigid, and perhaps non-existent. Further work on the context of ancient Jewish magic may therefore lead to new perceptions of ancient Jewish society.

Sonja Noll, "In pursuit of a hapax: divergent interpretations of the root s-k-t," 255-268

A shift occurred in the lexicographical tradition of the hapax legomenon הַסְכֵּת (Deut. 27:9) between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. The hiphil imperative had previously been understood to mean ‘listen’ or ‘pay attention’, a tradition reflected in the Targumim, Peshitta, Vulgate, Aquila and early dictionaries. With the introduction of Arabic cognate evidence into Hebrew dictionaries in the seventeenth century, however, the meaning ‘be silent’, from the Arabic cognate سكت, began to appear in entries for this root. Dictionaries also began to include the translation σιώπα, ‘be silent’, from the Greek Septuagint, and eventually the gloss ‘be silent’ replaced ‘listen’ in bilingual biblical Hebrew dictionaries. The difference in meaning is minor, but this case study serves to illustrate the striking influence of cognate scholarship on the development of biblical Hebrew dictionaries.

The purported border of Jewish settlement in the Western Galilee is identified in two separate tannaitic texts, each referring to the ̔Akko–Akhziv road. One text cites this road as the western border of Jewish settlement, while the other cites the same road as the eastern border. The border of Jewish settlement is also described in another rabbinic text, also discovered in the Reḥov synagogue excavations. This text is inconsistent with the texts referring to the ̔Akko–Akhziv road. Archaeologists give priority to the Reḥov inscription and dismiss the contradictory texts as a scribal error. Talmudic scholars validate the authenticity of the apparently contradictory texts using critical textual analysis, but leave the apparent contradictions unresolved. This article uses archaeological evidence in conjunction with a critical review of the texts to resolve the apparent contradiction, proving that the rabbinic texts authenticated by Talmudic scholars are consistent with the Reḥov inscription.
