John P. Meier (8.8.1942-18.10.2022)

 Έφυγε από τη ζωή ο John P. Meier, ομότιμος καθηγητής της Καινής Διαθήκης του Πανεπιστημίου Notre-Dame, Indiana (ΗΠΑ). Εκτός από το ερευνητικό του έργο ο εκλιπών υπήρξε ιερέας της Καθολικής Εκκλησίας και πρελάτος επί τιμή. Μέχρι το τέλος της ζωής του εργάστηκε με αφοσίωση και πάθος για την καινοδιαθηκική έρευνα κι άφησε πίσω ένα σημαντικό συγγραφικό έργο. Είναι ιδιαίτερα γνωστός για το πολύτομο έργο του A Marginal Jew: Rethinking the Historical Jesus (πριν το θάνατό του ετοίμαζε τον 6ο τόμο), στο οποίο με τη βοήθεια της ιστορικοκριτικής μεθόδου ανέλυε τις αρχαίες πηγές (κανονικά και μη κανονικά κείμενα) κι αναζητούσε τα στοιχεία που βοηθούν να ανακατασκευαστεί το ιστορικό πρόσωπο του Ιησού.

Στην ιστοσελίδα The Bible and Interpretation η Barbara Meyer συζητά την στάση της έρευνας στο ζήτημα της ιουδαϊκής ταυτότητας του Ιησού. Μολονότι κατά την τρίτη φάση της έρευνας για τον ιστορικό Ιησού η θέση του μέσα στον Ιουδαϊσμό του 1ου αι. μ.Χ. αποτέλεσε αντικείμενο συζήτησης, το θέμα παραμένει αρκετά περιφερειακό εξαιτίας κυρίως της γενικής θέσης ότι ο ιστορικός Ιησούς δεν υπήρξε ένας τυπικός Ιουδαίος της εποχής του. Είναι όμως αυτό ιστορικά ακριβές ή αποτελεί μία interpretatio christiana του ιστορικού Ιησού που διευκολύνει την ταύτιση των Χριστιανών μαζί του;

Κατά Ιωάννην και ιστορία / John's Gospel and history

Το θέμα της ιστορικότητας του κατά Ιωάννην ευαγγελίου έχει απασχολήσει την έρευνα με τους ειδικούς γενικά να υιοθετούν μία μάλλον επιφυλακτική στάση. Είναι μάλιστα χαρακτηριστικό ότι το τέταρτο ευαγγέλιο δεν καταλαμβάνει θέση στις συζητήσεις για τον ιστορικό Ιησού σε όλες τις προηγούμενες φάσεις της σχετικής έρευνας. Κατά τις τελευταίες όμως δεκαετίες διάφορες μελέτες έχουν αναδείξει τα ιστορικά στοιχεία του κατά Ιωάννην κι η αρχαιολογία έχει επιβεβαιώσει την ακρίβεια των τοπογραφικών λεπτομερειών του ευαγγελίου. Στο κείμενο που δημοσιεύει ο Paul Anderson στη σελίδα The Bible and Interpretation παρουσιάζει αρκετά από αυτά τα στοιχεία:

John: The Mundane Gospel and its Archaeology-Related Features

James Dunn (21.10.1939-26.6.2020)

Έφυγε από τη ζωή, ο ομότιμος καθηγητής της Καινής Διαθήκης στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Durham, James Dunn. Ο εκπλιπών υπήρξε αναμφίβολα ένας από τους σημαντικότερους καινοδιαθηκολόγους του δεύτερου μισού του 20ου αι. Το ερευνητικό του έργο καλύπτει ένα ευρύ φάσμα των καινοδιαθηκικών σπουδών. Διαβάζοντας τις μελέτες του μπορεί κανείς να διακρίνει την κριτική του διαύγεια, την οξύνοια των τοποθετήσεών του, τη δυνατότητα να διαλέγεται με την προηγούμενη έρευνα και την ευρύτητα των γνώσεών του. Δεν είναι υπερβολικό να πει κανείς πως ο Dunn έκανε τομές σε κάθε πεδίο της καινοδιαθηκικής έρευνας  με το οποίο ασχολήθηκε, ιδιαίτερα μάλιστα στην έρευνα για τον ιστορικό Ιησού, όπου ανέδειξε τη σημασία της προφορικότητας συνεχίζοντας το έργο του Kenneth Bailey, και σε εκείνη για τον Παύλο και τη σχέση του με τον Ιουδαϊσμό συνεχίζοντας το έργο του E.P. Sanders και εισάγοντας την ιδέα της νέας προοπτικής στη σπουδή του Παύλου (new perspective). Υπήρξε πολυγραφότατος: The Theology of Paul the Apostle (1998), Christianity in the Making: Vol. 1, Jesus Remembered (2003), vol. 2, Beginning from Jerusalem (2008), Vol. 3, Neither Jew nor Greek: A Contested Identity (2015), The New Perspective On Paul (2007), A New Perspective On Jesus: What The Quest For The Historical Jesus Missed (2005), The Oral Gospel Tradition (2013). H οικογένεια των καινοδιαθηκολόγων φτωχαίνει χάνοντας έναν σεμνό ερευνητή και δάσκαλο. Ας είναι αιωνία η μνήμη του!

Η κοινωνική διαστρωμάτωση των πρώτων χριστιανικών ομάδων της Γαλιλαίας / The social stratification of the early Christian groups in Galilee

Στην ιστοσελίδα The Bible and Interpretation οι Ben-Zion Rosenfeld και Haim Perlmutter συζητούν το κοινωνικό προφίλ της Γαλιλαίας του 1ου αι. μ.Χ. κι υποστηρίζουν ότι ο Ιησούς κι η πρώτη ομάδα που τον ακολούθησε προέρχεται από μία μάλλον μεσαία κοινωνική ομάδα. Οι συγγραφείς στηρίζονται κυρίως στα ραββινικά κείμενα. Μολονότι αυτά είναι μια σημαντική πηγή, έχω κάποιες επιφυλάξεις κατά πόσο μπορούν να μας δώσουν ασφαλείς πληροφορίες για την κοινωνία της εποχής του Ιησού:
