Η χάλκινη μικρογραφία της Ceres που βρέθηκε στο South Shields

Μία μικρογραφία της θεάς Ceres, το ρωμαϊκό αντίστοιχο της ελληνικής Δήμητρας ανακάλυψε ομάδα εθελοντών κατά τις αρχαιολογικές εργασίες στο ρωμαϊκό φρούριο Arbeia, στο South Shields, στην ΒΑ Αγγλία. Το φρούριο κτίσθηκε από τους Ρωμαίους κατά τον 2ο αι. μ.Χ. κι είχε διάρκεια ζωής μέχρι και τον 4ο αι. Η Ceres ήταν θεά της γονιμότητας και το όνομά της συχνά θεωρούνταν συνώνυμο με το σιτάρι και το ψωμί. Είχε το δικό της ιερατείο και στη Ρώμη συνδεόταν κυρίως με τις τάξεις των πληβείων. Στους γάμους ένα αγόρι που προπορευόταν της νυφικής πομπής κρατούσε τη δική της δάδα. Το πρόσωπό της συνδέθηκε με τις οικογενειακές αξίες, το γάμο, τη μητρότητα και τις γυναικείες αρετές. Στις απεικονίσεις της κρατά δάδα ή στάχυα σιταριού μαζί με παπαρούνες ενώ στους βραχίονές της είναι τυλιγμένα φίδια (βλ. τη φωτογραφία) και στο κεφάλι της στεφάνι από στάχυα.
