Οι αρχαιολογικές ανακαλύψεις από τη συναγωγή της Huqoq εξακολουθούν να μας εντυπωσιάζουν. Το μεγάλο μωσαϊκό αποκαλύπτει χρόνο με το χρόνο τα μυστικά του· εντυπωσιακές αναπαραστάσεις βιβλικών ιστοριών και της ιστορίας του Ισραήλ. Δύο ακόμη σκηνές ήρθαν στο φως από την ομάδα του UNC-Chapel Hill με επικεφαλής τη γνωστή αρχαιολόγο Jodi Magness: μία αναπαράσταση της ιστορίας της Αϊλείμ (Έξοδος 15,27· Αριθμοί 33,9), από την πορεία των Ισραηλιτών στην έρημο (βλ. λεπτομέρεια στη φωτο) και τα θηρία του βιβλίου του Δανιήλ. 

Οι παραστάσεις του μωσαϊκού αποτελούν αναμφισβήτητα ένα από τα πλέον ενδιαφέροντα ευρήματα στη γη του Ισραήλ κατά τα τελευταία χρόνια· πληροφορούν όχι μόνο για την οικονομική άνεση και τις καλλιτεχνικές προτιμήσεις των μελών της συγκεκριμένης λατρευτικής κοινότητας. Είναι, ταυτόχρονα, εξαιρετικά δείγματα πρόσληψης των βιβλικών ιστοριών και μαρτυρούν εμμέσως για τα ενδιαφέροντα και τις προσδοκίες των ανθρώπων αυτής της συναγωγής 1600 πριν:

H Jodi Magness παρουσιάζει δύο σημαντικά νέα ψηφιδωτά που ήρθαν στο φως στη συναγωγή της Huqoq κατά τις ανασκαφές του τρέχοντος έτους. Πρόκειται για μία ιστορία από το βιβλίο του Δανιήλ  (τα θηρία που αναφέρονται στο κεφ. 7) και την ιστορία από την όαση της Ελίμ στο Εξ 15,27:

Η Jodi Magness κι η ομάδα της από το University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill παρουσίασαν τα νέα ψηφιδωτά που έφεραν στο φως κατά το τελευταίο έτος: η ιστορία του Ιωνά, ο πύργος της Βαβέλ, η καταστροφή του αιγυπτιακού στρατού στην Ερυθρά, η Κιβωτός του Νώε. Η συναγωγές του 1ου αι; / The synagogues of the 1st c. AD?

Κυκλοφόρησε από τις εκδόσεις της Society of Biblical Literature η μελέτη της Lidia Matassa σχετικά με το ζήτημα ύπαρξης συναγωγών κατά τον 1ο αι. μ.Χ. Η ερευνήτρια, της οποίας το έργο εκδίδεται μετά θάνατον, εξετάζει προσεκτικά όλα τα αρχαιολογικά δεδομένα και τις υπόλοιπες αρχαίες πηγές σχετικά με πέντε διαφορετικούς αρχαιολογικούς τόπους, οι οποίοι έχουν ταυτοποιηθεί ως τόποι αρχαίων Ιουδαϊκών συναγωγών: Δήλος, Ιεριχώ, Μασάδα, Ηρώδειο και Gamla. Καταλήγει στο συμπέρασμα ότι σε καμιά από τις πέντε περιπτώσεις δεν υπάρχουν ασφαλείς αρχαιολογικές ενδείξεις που να ευνοούν τη θέση ότι πρόκειται για υπολείμματα συναγωγών πριν τον 1ο αι. μ.Χ. 

Σημειώνω εδώ την προσεκτική της παρατήρηση όσον αφορά στη μέθοδο ταυτοποίησης τέτοιων αρχαιολογικών ευρημάτων: 

There is, unfortunately, little material to suggest a clear identification method, and the gap between modern theory and the material record remains the central problem in the field of synagogue studies, especially in relation to pre-70 CE structures. While it is neither possible nor desirable to disprove synagogue identifications, it is fair to say that there has to be some evidence present, be it textual, epigraphical, architectural, or archaeological, before a positive identification can be made and before a synagogue so identified should be accepted into the body of scholarship on the subject and used as a basis on which to identify other structures.

Στην ιστοσελίδα The Bible and Interpretation ο David Gurevich δημοσιεύει ένα εκτενές άρθρο σχετικά με τα αρχαιολογικά ευρήματα από τα Μάγδαλα και κυρίως τη συναγωγή της πόλης (1ος αι. μ.Χ.) και το λεγόμενο "λίθο των Μαγδάλων":

Οι αρχαιολογικές ανακαλύψεις στην Huqoq / The archaeological findings in Huqoq

Τα ευρήματα από τη συναγωγή της Huqoq δεν σταματούν να εντυπωσιάζουν ειδικούς και μη ήδη από το 2012, όταν άρχισαν οι πρώτες ειδήσεις να κάνουν την εμφάνισή τους στον τύπο και στο διαδίκτυο. Το μεγάλο σύνθετο μωσαϊκό της συναγωγής αποτελεί αναμφισβήτητα το σημαντικότερο εύρημα με παραστάσεις από την ιστορία του αρχαίου Ισραήλ (ανάμεσά τους η Κιβωτός του Νώε, η διάβαση της Ερυθράς Θάλασσας αλλά κι η είσοδος του Αλεξάνδρου στην Ιερουσαλήμ). Καθώς η ανασκαφή του δεν έχει ολοκληρωθεί, οι εικόνες από το μεγάλο αυτό έργο έρχονται σταδιακά στο φως. Η τελευταία ανακάλυψη είναι η παράσταση των κατασκόπων που επιστρέφουν από τη γη της Επαγγελίας με ένα τεράστιο τσαμπί σταφύλια, εικόνα παρμένη από τη σχετική αφήγηση του βιβλίου των Αριθμών (13:23). Στον αρχαιολογικό χώρο εργάζεται από το 2012 μία ομάδα αρχαιολόγων του Πανεπιστημίου της North Carolina-Chapel Hill υπό την καθοδήγηση της Jodi Magness και με τη βοήθεια εθελοντών φοιτητών.
