 Tο συλλογικό έργο Citizenship Practised, Citizenship Imagined: Multiple Ways of Experiencing Citizenship in the Greek World, που επιμελήθηκαν οι Lucia Cecchet και Chiara Lasagni, είναι διαθέσιμο ως open access και αξίζει την προσοχή όσων ενδιαφέρονται για την κοινωνική και πολιτική ιστορία του αρχαίου ελληνικού κόσμου. Πρόκειται για έναν τόμο που εξετάζει την έννοια της πολιτείας όχι ως στατικό νομικό προνόμιο, αλλά ως ένα σύνθετο κοινωνικό, πολιτικό και πολιτισμικό φαινόμενο.

Η βασική αρετή του βιβλίου είναι ότι αναδεικνύει την ποικιλία των πρακτικών εφαρμογών και των συμβολικών κατανοήσεων της ιδιότητας του πολίτη στις πόλεις του ελληνικού κόσμου. Οι μελέτες του τόμου κινούνται από την αρχαϊκή και κλασική περίοδο έως και τους αυτοκρατορικούς χρόνους, αξιοποιώντας ένα πλούσιο πηγαίο υλικό (επιγραφές, φιλολογικά και ιστορικά κείμενα). Ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον έχουν οι ενότητες για τη διαμόρφωση της συμμετοχής στην πόλη, για τη θέση και την ενσωμάτωση των «εκτός» στην πολιτειακή κοινότητα, αλλά και για μορφές της ιδιότητας του πολίτη πέρα από τα στενά όρια της πόλεως, όπως στα κοινά και στην περίπτωση των πολλαπλών πολιτειακών ταυτοτήτων. 

Για όσους ασχολούνται με την ιστορία των θεσμών, την επιγραφική, τις ταυτότητες και τις πρακτικές ένταξης στον αρχαίο κόσμο, ο τόμος αυτός προσφέρει ένα πολύ χρήσιμο ερμηνευτικό πλαίσιο. Παράλληλα, δείχνει πόσο ανεπαρκές είναι να σκεφτόμαστε την αρχαία ελληνική πολιτεία μόνο με όρους τυπικών δικαιωμάτων ή μόνο με αφετηρία την κλασική Αθήνα. Αντίθετα, προτείνει μια πιο σύνθετη και ιστορικά ευαίσθητη κατανόηση της έννοιας του πολίτη ως πρακτικής, λόγου και εμπειρίας. Οι μελέτες, όμως, του τόμου προσφέρουν χρήσιμο υλικό και για όσους μελετούν το περιβάλλον των πρώτων χριστιανικών κοινοτήτων. Άλλωστε, το θέμα της πολιτειακής ταυτότητας φαίνεται να απασχολεί και τα κείμενα της Καινής Διαθήκης, όπου χρησιμοποιούνται σχετικοί όροι (πολίτευμα, έθνος κ.ά.) και προτείνεται η εναλλακτική ταυτότητα του χριστιανού (βλ. και τις σχετικές αναφορές σε κείμενα όπως η Επιστολή πρὸς Διόγνητον).

The collective volume Citizenship Practised, Citizenship Imagined: Multiple Ways of Experiencing Citizenship in the Greek World, edited by Lucia Cecchet and Chiara Lasagni, is available in open access and deserves the attention of all those interested in the social and political history of the ancient Greek world. This volume explores citizenship not as a static legal privilege, but as a complex social, political, and cultural phenomenon.

One of the book’s main strengths is that it highlights the variety of practical expressions and symbolic understandings of citizen status in the cities of the Greek world. The studies included in the volume range from the Archaic and Classical periods to the Imperial era, drawing on a rich body of primary evidence, including inscriptions, literary texts, and historical sources. Particularly interesting are the sections devoted to the shaping of civic participation, to the position and integration of those “outside” the civic community, and to forms of citizenship beyond the narrow framework of the polis, such as in federal states and in cases of multiple civic identities.

For those working on the history of institutions, epigraphy, identities, and practices of integration in the ancient world, this volume offers a very useful interpretive framework. At the same time, it shows how inadequate it is to think about ancient Greek citizenship only in terms of formal rights or only from the perspective of Classical Athens. Instead, it proposes a more complex and historically sensitive understanding of citizenship as practice, discourse, and lived experience. The studies in this volume, however, also offer valuable material for those interested in the environment of the earliest Christian communities. After all, questions of civic identity also seem to concern the texts of the New Testament, where related terms are used (such as politeuma, ethnos, and others) and where an alternative identity for the Christian is proposed (see also the relevant references in texts such as the Epistle to Diognetus).
