Πολλοί ερευνητές του Ιουδαϊσμού του Δεύτερου Ναού αντικατέστησαν την ιδέα της "κανονικοποίησης" με εκείνη της διαδικασίας σχηματισμού του κανόνα. Η μελέτη των κειμένων τηςς Νεκράς Θάλασσας υπήρξε αποφασιστικής σημασίας γι' αυτό. Με βάση αυτήν τη νέα τάση κάθε προσπάθεια ταξινόμησης των βιβλίων του αρχαίου Ιουδαϊσμού σε βιβλικά, μη βιβλικά και παρα-βιβλικά μοιάζει αναχρονιστική για την περίοδο πριν το 70 μ.Χ. Η ιδέα των Γραφών με αυθεντία διαδραματίζει ένα σημαντικό ρόλο στο νέο παράδειγμα της διαδικασίας σχηματισμού του κανόνα, δεν έχει όμως ακόμη συζητηθεί εκτενώς και ικανοποιητικά. Γιατί κάποια κείμενα είχαν μεγαλύτερη αυθεντικότητα από κάποια άλλα; Για ποιον και σε ποιες συνάφειες ήταν κάποια κείμενα αυθεντικά; Ποια είναι τα κριτήρια που καθορίζουν μέχρι ποιο βαθμό ένα κείμενο θα είναι κείμενο αυθεντίας; Οι μελέτες του παρόντος τόμου επικεντρώνονται σε συγκεκριμένα κείμενα ή ομάδες κειμένων και προσεγγίζουν το θέμα από την κοινωνιολογική, πολιτισμική και φιλολογική οπτική.
