EUROPEAN ASSOCIATION OF BIBLICAL STUDIES

The European Association of Biblical Studies (EABS) is a scholarly organization that has been founded to promote the cause of biblical studies and related areas (e.g., ancient Near Eastern studies, Jewish studies, Early Christian studies) in Europe. It is open to membership from anyone with a scholarly interest in these fields, regardless of nationality or place of residence.

In its annual meetings, the EABS aims at creating an international forum for people working within biblical studies and related areas to meet each other and share their work. Different research programs are organized into seminars. Several of them have a broad orientation on methodological and hermeneutical questions enabling colleagues from contiguous disciplines to interact and learn from each other. We are aiming at an atmosphere of open dialogue crossing the customary disciplinary borders. The next conference will be held from July 26th-29th, 2009 at the University of Lincoln, UK.

The association invites anyone with an initiative to create new seminar groups to do so. It offers a forum, e.g., for locally operating projects to present their work for an international audience. The seminars and sessions can be in a variety of formats and contributions and discussions can be held in any languages deemed appropriate by the organizers.

The EABS has a special emphasis on fostering the development of younger scholars, including postgraduate students, and wants to provide a context that allows and encourages their participation in scholarship, discussion, and debate. The more established scholars are encouraged to share their experience and knowledge with their younger colleagues. Efforts are made to keep the conference registration and accommodation costs as low as possible to enable doctoral students to participate. Moreover, students giving a paper in an EABS meeting can apply for a scholarship to assist in travel expenses.
