Thomas Söding, "Peter : eine exegetische Hommage," 7-13
For Peter Dschulnigg the Peter of the New Testament was not only a topic of research but a person of orientation. To read his book from 1996 now shows essential aspects of his exegetical hermeneutic: his interest in the human side of the faith, his Swiss Catholicism and his academic competence in Biblical exegesis and theology.
Alexander Weihs, "Die Intention des Markusevangeliums : eine Erinnerung an Peter Dschulnigg," 15-24
The article gives a survey of the work of Peter Dschulnigg as explorer and interpreter of the Gospel of Mark. The particular focus thereby lies on the question of the intention of the Gospel of Mark, which was the subject of Peter Dschulnigg's interests time and again from his exegetical beginnings to his last publications.
Christian Münch, "Urgestein der Überlieferung!? : Gleichnisse als Medien der Jesus-Erinnerung," 25-38
In his Habilitation Peter Dschulnigg has criticized an understanding of the parable tradition that is inspired by archaeology and describes the process of tradition as a process of overlying the original structures with the rubbish of later times. Seizing Dschulnigg's criticism the article asks for a more adequate understanding of the parable tradition and examines especially, in which way the medium itself, i. e. the genre of the parables, influences the shape and the content of the tradition.
Beate Kowalski, "Das Hohepriesterliche Gebet Jesu (Joh 17)," 39-57
This contribution is reminiscent of my promoter Peter Dschulnigg for whom theology was not only pure science but of vital significance. Prayer had a fundamental value for him. Jesus' prayer for his disciples in John 17 is examined with an exegetical and biblical-theological approach within the context of the Johannine theology of prayer.
Ruth Schäfer, "Die Verheißung an Sara : Ansätze einer Sara-Tradition im Neuen Testament und ihre Grundlage in Gen 18,1-15," 59-84
Although Abraham (and being his children) is far more in the focus of the New Testament, it is important, for once to explore the small tradition of texts about Sara.
In Gal 4:21-31 Paul assures the mixed churches in Galatia which consist both of Jewish and non-Jewish members, of being part of the people of Israel brought together by God's promise and covenant. Sara guarantees for him freedom, she is called mother of these churches.
Being a child of Abraham is in itself not sufficient to claim the rightful heritage of God's promise and the freedom of these churches, but only in the specific form of also being children of Sara. The free social status of Sara is explained to the non-Jewish Galatian men as tomean the freedom of not being circumcised. The renewed inclusion of this theme in Rom 9:6-9 shows that this interpretation of Paul is relevant for all churches whose members share their lives according to the Antiochian model of a mission community.
Hebr 11:8-16 stresses Sara's faith in God's faithfulness to his promises. By faith she received the strength to found an offspring. The modern interpretation that tries to instead relate verse 11 to Abraham, is reasonably rejected. For God it is not at all shameful being called to be Sara's God.
The domestic code 1 Peter 3:1-7 is read very critically. But although the intentions of this text of giving advice to women is not beyond doubt, at least Sara is introduced as a good example. The addressed women members of the congregation are explicitly mentioned as being her children. Still it can be regretted that the example of Sara is only pointed out toward the women and not also to the men in the Galatian churches.
Finally, Gen 18:1-15, a basic and important text belonging to the tradition about Sara in the Old Testament, is put into a feminist focus. Not the hospitality of Abraham toward his visitors is earning him any promise, but this promise of the birth of a son is freely given by God to Sara. As Abrahamís activities cause a delay, maybe they do more harm than good. The aim of the story is to tell about the encounter between God and Sara, in which she is directly addressed and given the promise of childbirth. The couple of short texts that appreciate Sara in the New Testament can be legitimately based on that fine text in the Old Testament.
Günter Röhser, "Erwählung und Vorherbestimmung im Epheserbrief," 85-110
Propositions of election and predestination play a significant role in Ephesians, as is demonstrated in particular by the eulogy 1:3-14, but also by the predetermination of the "good works" according to 2:10 and the role of Paul in 3:8-11. Besides general functions of knowledge mediation, making sure of salvation, instructions for the praise of God and coping with uncertainty of the Christian life of any kind, these propositions also relate to the challenges of an early post-Pauline situation: foundation and preservation of the unity of Jewish and Gentile Christians, deficient external presentation of Christian identity, reflection on the importance of the Apostle Paul. The notion of a representation of the Christians by Christ as the pre-cosmic mediator of election in Eph 1:4 can be related to the formation of an early concept of "church".
Mariusz Rosik, "Klassische griechische Biografie und Evangelium : die Frage nach der literarischen Gattung," 111-133
In biblical studies until a few years ago it was largely admitted that the gospel is a particular literary genre. Some biblical scholars challenged this statement, beginning research in this field. Their research consisted mainly in studium comparativum of the literary genres in ancient Greek literature. The conclusion of these studies is quite fascinating: Today we can assume that the gospel is a sub-genre of ancient biographical narrative. The article presents main characteristics of ancient biographical narratives, comparing them with literary characteristics of the four canonical gospels.
Rainer Schwindt, "Angekommen in heidnischem Land : Barnabas und Paulus in Lystra (Apg 14,8-20)," 135-158
The episode in Lystra presents Luke as a storyteller who sublimely takes up the special feature of the preaching situation and local colour and forms it with his theology of history. Luke opposes the biblical faith in one God with the pagan anthropomorphic faith in the God's using a two-fold distinction between creator and creature on the one hand and the acting of God and of the human beings on the other hand.
Thomas Witulski, "Die Gestalt des Abraham als Beleg für die soteriologische Dysfunktionalität des νόμος : Erwägungen zu Struktur und Argumentation von Gal 3,6-14," 159-205
In Gal 3,6-14 the apostle deliberates on the question whether νόμος has a soteriological functionality
or rather disfunctionality in the context of the figure of Abraham. In the process he comes to the following conclusions: (a) The sonship of Abraham which is to be understood in a corporate sense is exclusively transferred by the principle of πίστις. This implies that the integration into the sphere of the εὐλογία Ἀβραάμ ñ and consequently also the realisation of the δικαιοσύνη which is only available in this very sphere are transferred by πίστις alone. (b) The principle of νόμος merely leads to the κατάρα νόμου but not into the sonship of Abraham nor into the δικαιοσύνη before God because the principle of νόμος well-nigh excludes the one of πίστις. In the light of the argumentative effort Paul makes in this paragraph the following presumption does not seem implausible: the apostle integrates the question of the sonship of Abraham or rather the thesis of the participation in the εὐλογία Ἀβραάμ which is put into effect in the context of this sonship of Abraham in his argumentation which is overall focused on proving the soteriological disfunctionality of νόμος. Paul can include this issue into his general argumentation because it is of fundamental significance to the Galatian congregations
within the scope of the prevailing theological conflict. If this is accurate, then it is very plausible to conclude that Paulís active opponents in the Galatian congregations propagandised a soteriological qualified and qualifying sonship of Abraham and accordingly the participation in εὐλογία which is connected to the figure of Abraham - and thus, if only implicitly, also a participation in δικαιοσύνη -exclusively ἐξ ἔργων νόμου respectively exclusively ἐκ νόμου in order to disavow the apostle's free-of-law gospel with the Galatian Christians.

490 σελίδες
ISBN: 978-0-8028-7151-0

Description (περιγραφή εκδ. οίκου)
A novel, rigorous solution to the long-contested puzzle regarding the composition of Paul's letters
All historical work on Paul presupposes a story concerning the composition of his letters — which ones he actually wrote, how many pieces they might originally have consisted of, when he wrote them, where from, and why. But the answers given to these questions are often derived in dubious ways.
In Framing Paul Douglas Campbell reappraises all these issues in rigorous fashion, appealing only to Paul's own epistolary data in order to derive a basic "frame" for the letters on which all subsequent interpretation can be built. Though figuring out the authorship and order of Paul's letters has been thought to be impossible, Campbell's Framing Paul presents a cogent solution to the puzzle.

Διεπιστημονικότητα και βιβλικές σπουδές / Interdisciplinarity and biblical studies
"If we want to integrate the insights of other disciplines into our interpretation of biblical texts and contexts – and we should – we must develop a culture in which the expectations of such engagement are high and the standards are robust. Though we cannot (and should not) demand second (and third, and so on) degrees in other subjects prior to allowing ourselves to broach an interdisciplinary project or study, we must hold ourselves to a depth of engagement which is sufficient to enable the intelligent, nuanced and critical use of other disciplinary perspectives. If we fail in this charge we do our own discipline a great disservice, as we squander the wealth of these other disciplines’ contribution to the interpretation of the primary object of our intentions: the biblical texts themselves."

EABS Graduate Symposium 2015: March 27-29 in Leuven, Belgium (CFP)
EABS is excited to announce its seventh graduate symposium, which will take place in Leuven, March 27-29, 2015.
The symposium, which seeks to engender a supportive atmosphere for dialogue across a variety of biblical studies fields and subfields (Hebrew Scriptures, OT, NT, DSS, early Christianity, Septuagint studies, second temple Judaism, rabbinics, reception history, methodologies, etc.), welcomes PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers to present on a topic related to their research area(s).
Participants may format their presentation according to their preference: paper, seminar discussion, workshop session, poster or another form. Every abstract will be reviewed by a team of scholars who will give feedback and suggestions for improvement, if necessary. Our goal is to assist in developing the abstracts to the best possible form and encourage the authors of the best abstracts to submit them to research seminars of the EABS Annual Meeting 2015 in Cordoba and to enter their papers for the EABS Student Prize. During the symposium each student will get 20 minutes to submit their paper which will be followed by an extended discussion. The EABS Graduate Symposium looks forward to welcoming some senior scholars, including the EABS president, Professor Reimund Bieringer (KU Leuven), who will offer feedback and share from their own experience in the field. In addition, the symposium looks forward to continuing its tradition of holding a joint session with graduate students from the University of Alberta. Besides, we have arranged for another trans-Atlantic skype session with students from Emory University!
Candidates should submit their abstracts and/or posters of no more than 300 words to students@eabs.net no later than January 10th, 2015. Please do not forget to mention the preferred format in the abstract (i.e. paper, workshop, pre-circulated paper, discussion, poster, etc.).

Sebastian Graetz, "Heiliges Buch – heilige Sprache?," 237-250
Abstract: The article examines the different status of the Torah within the biblical tradition and outside of it. The pertinent external data display no certain evidence for the use or application of the Torah until the Hasmonean era. Thus, the concept of a canonized Torah that can be labeled as “holy” (Neh 8) is primarily a scholarly construct resulting from inner-Biblical interpretation with certain propositions and appropriate conclusions. One of these propositions is the heavenly origin of the Torah which leads to the conclusion that only a priest (Ezra) is suitable to teach and to interpret the Torah. It seems likely that this concept of a “holy” book affects gradually also the language in which it was written (as already the Book of Jubilees and 4Q464 show).
Andreas Gipper, "Vertikales Übersetzen. Vom translatorischen Umgang mit Sakralsprache," 251-262
Abstract: Since the beginning of western translation-theory the problem how to deal with sacred texts held a singular importance. Until today translation-theories often prove to be inspired by theological issues (Schleiermacher, Benjamin, Nida, Meschonnic). Some of these questions will be discussed in the present paper by the means of the distinction between horizontal and vertical translation and referring to two historical examples: Jerome’s bible translation and the bible translation of Port-Royal.

Περιγραφή εκδοτικού οίκου / Description
The first five books of the New Testament contain a large proportion of all uses of the term Farisai/oj in extant literature. In the light of growing scepticism among historians of Judaism over the accuracy and legitimacy of reconstructions of the Pharisees of history, Mary Marshall sets aside the quest for the historical Pharisees and instead offers an analysis of the portrayal of the Pharisees by each evangelist. The author adopts a redaction critical approach which incorporates narrative critical observations where appropriate. Her examination of the texts demonstrates the particularity of each book and its portrayal of the Pharisees. The five books do not portray a monolithic body of evidence but each has its own style, occasion and purpose(s). All New Testament portrayals of the Pharisees occupy a good deal of common ground and yet the pictures they produce are not identical. Every one of the evangelists integrates the Pharisees into his own presentation of the gospel, emphasisingthose aspects of the Pharisees’ portrayal which serve his own particular concerns. This study of material from the gospels and Acts yields multi-faceted portraits of the Pharisees and discloses the variety of christological, soteriological, ecclesiological and ethical concerns with which they are associated. It alerts the exegete both to the nuances within a given New Testament book and to the subtle differences between books. It demonstrates the combination of fidelity and freedom with which the evangelists regarded their inherited tradition and sources. The way the Pharisees are portrayed in each text is particular to that text and its purposes, and therefore consideration of the Pharisees’ portrayal is able to enrich our understanding of the gospels and Acts more generally.

Yitzhaq Feder, "The Wilderness Camp Paradigm in the Holiness Source and the Temple Scroll: From Purity Laws to Cult Politics," 290-310
Abstract: This paper explores the socio-historical implications of the levitical purity laws as they are understood in the Holiness Source (H) and the Temple Scroll (TS). Though these sources show a similarity in rhetoric, closer examination reveals fundamental differences between them. In particular, I focus on the manner in which these sources understand the wilderness camp model, which serves as the primary framework for the application of the biblical purity laws. In H, we find a repeated emphasis on the danger of polluting the Tabernacle (e. g., Lev 15:31; Num 5:4; 19:13, 20). From a strict philological analysis of these sources, it becomes clear that these statements focus on the purity of the centralized sanctuary. Interestingly, this attitude finds echoes in the rabbinic view, which restricted the application of the purity laws almost exclusively to Jerusalem. In comparison, the interpretation of these verses in TS construes them as requiring purity in other cities throughout the land. The comparison of these sources and the relationship between purity and the cult establishment implied by them can serve as a basis for contextualizing them historically. This analysis can enable us to trace the development of attitudes towards purity in Israel in the periods before and after cult centralization.
Walter Houston, "Between Salem and Mount Gerizim: The Context of the Formation of the Torah Reconsidered," 311-344
Abstract: Building on recent suggestions, I argue that the final composition of the Pentateuch in the Persian period was the result of common enterprise or compromise between the province of Samaria and Jerusalem. This is based on an examination of the historical circumstances as well as on the contents and text of the Pentateuch. Contrary to the picture painted in Ezra-Nehemiah, there were good relationships and contacts between the upper classes of the two provinces throughout the period, and it is probable that the priestly staff of the temple of Argarizim, which recent evidence shows was established in the mid fifth century, was closely related to that of Jerusalem. The identities of both holy places are hinted at in the text. The likely original text of Deut 27:2–8 ordains sacrifice to be made and the Torah to be inscribed on Mount Gerizim (v. 4), not on Mount Ebal as in the MT. This either suggested the establishment of the sanctuary there (Kartveit), or was suggested by it (Nihan). On the other hand, Gen 14:18 refers to Jerusalem under the name of Salem. The Torah contains material of northern origin, and some of it, especially the story of Joseph, originated relatively late. The Tabernacle and ritual texts in P do not, as often thought, represent the Jerusalem temple, but an ideal sanctuary, and they are available to reform the practice of both temples. The MT, like the Samaritan Pentateuch, contains revisions away from the common inheritance.
Molly Zahn, "Prophecy Rewritten: Use of Scriptural Traditions in 4QPseudo-Ezekiel," 335-367
Abstract: Despite the amount of attention and study given to “rewritten scripture” and related phenomena in recent years, a number of texts that appear to employ rewriting have not been fully analyzed from this perspective, including 4QPseudo-Ezekiel. This study provides a detailed examination of the ways 4QPseudo-Ezekiel interacts with known versions of scripture and integrates the results of that examination into the larger conversation surrounding the various forms and purposes of rewriting in Second Temple Judaism. The evidence suggests that the goals and functions of scriptural reuse in 4QPseudo-Ezekiel closely resemble those of “rewritten scripture” texts like the Temple Scroll and Jubilees. At the same time, connections between the text and ideology of 4QPseudo-Ezekiel and that of versions of what became the biblical book of Ezekiel highlight the importance of joining study of “rewritten scripture” with study of the textual development of books of the Hebrew Bible.
Matthew Gordley, "Creating Meaning in the Present by Reviewing the Past: Communal Memory in the Psalms of Solomon," 368-392
Abstract: This article examines Psalms of Solomon with an eye toward how these compositions may have functioned within the setting of a first-century B. C. E. Jewish community in Jerusalem. Several of these psalms should be understood as didactic hymns providing instruction to their audience through the medium of psalmody. Attention to the temporal register of Pss. Sol. 8, 9, and 17 shows how the poet’s use of historical review and historical allusion contributed to a vision of present reality and future hope, which the audience was invited to embrace. Issues relating to the place of these psalms in the tradition of Solomonic discourse are also addressed insofar as they contribute to the didactic function of this psalm collection.
William A. Tooman, "The Hermeneutics of Scribal Rewriting in Targum Jonathan Ezek 1," 393-414
Abstract: This paper examines a number of expansions and rewordings in Tg. J. Ezek 1 that alter or elaborate upon the description of the celestial creatures. The object is threefold: to identify textual cues within the Targum’s Vorlage that sparked expansions or rewordings, to explain the exegetical choices reflected in those expansions and rewordings, and to deduce something about the hermeneutical assumptions under which those choices were made. Along the way, I explain several features of the Targum in new ways, but the principal objects of my inquiry are the scribes responsible for Targum Jonathan and the various ways that they interacted with their Hebrew Vorlage. I propose that the expansions and rewordings never reflect exuberance or whimsy on the part of the targumic scribes. Rather, they represent a disciplined effort to produce an accurate reading of their Hebrew text, undertaken according to certain hermeneutical assumptions, assumptions that are co-extensive with their assumptions about the nature of their source texts as scripture.
