Η "σιωπή" του Φίλωνα για τους Φαρισαίους και τους Σαδδουκαίους / The “Silence” of Philo on the Pharisees and the Sadducees

Αν τελικά ισχύει η υπόθεση του Goranson πόσο αυτό αλλάζει την κατανόηση του τρόπου που αυτές οι δύο ομάδες παρουσιάζονται μέσα στα κείμενα της Καινής Διαθήκης;

Stephen Goranson, "Did Philo Allude to Sadducees and Pharisees?

------------------------------------

[ENG

In his recent article on the Bible and Interpretation website, Stephen Goranson raises an important scholarly question: why does Philo of Alexandria never name the Pharisees or the Sadducees, while he speaks at length about the Essenes? Goranson investigates whether there are implicit references to these two groups in some of Philo's works, and particularly in the enigmatic passage of Quod Omnis Probus Liber Sit §§88–91. There, immediately after his praise of the Essenes, Philo speaks of two categories of advisors to the Hasmonean rulers: on the one hand, violent, "beast-like" leaders, and on the other, hypocritical flatterers who sought to achieve their ends through smooth talk. Goranson argues that this contrast bears a striking resemblance to Josephus's description of the Sadducees and Pharisees (Jewish War 2.162–167), in which the Pharisees are portrayed as skilled orators with popular influence, and the Sadducees as strict enforcers of the law. According to the author, Philo was writing about the same socio-political groups but from the perspective of a Diaspora Jew in Alexandria, without using — or perhaps without knowing — their technical names. If this reading holds, Philo constitutes an additional witness to how these sects were already being stereotyped and critically assessed before their technical nomenclature became established. Goranson's proposal allows us to see Philo not only as a Diaspora Jewish thinker but also as a witness to the social and ideological landscape of the Second Temple period. It remains, of course, an open question whether these two portrayals — the smooth-talking flatterer and the violent ruler — represent an implicit allusion at all, or simply a common rhetorical topos of the period.

If Goranson's hypothesis ultimately proves correct, how much does this change our understanding of the way these two groups are presented in the texts of the New Testament?
