Neglected Texts and Early Christian Identities
Durham University, 16-17 April, 2015

Please join us in the historic city of Durham for a two-day conference on neglected epistolary texts and early Christian identities. These texts include (but are not limited to) James, Hebrews, 1-2 Peter, as well as the Epistle of Barnabas and 1 Clement. In an era where a Pauline- or Gospel-centered reading is often the starting point for ‘the’ normative/orthodox reading, this gathering hopes to privilege these ‘muted’ texts to explore Christian identities from another perspective. The conference will take a multi-faceted approach, investigating identities via a number of avenues: theological, anthropological, sociological, reception historical, and political readings. Our world-class invited speakers will facilitate this discussion through plenary addresses, and we encourage you to contribute by submitting when our call for papers opens. We invite all those interested in the New Testament and Early Christianity to attend.

In order to foster interdisciplinary dialogue, we welcome papers that adopt approaches from a variety of fields, including theology and religious studies, social sciences, ancient history, and literary studies. The unifying element will be the body of texts, as papers must deal with a non-Pauline and non-Johannine early Christian letter[s] (typically datedpre-third century), as well as the theme of identity. This can include aspects of early Christian identities revealed in the letters or how these letters shaped or influenced the identities of future Christians. Although comparative studies with other NT texts are welcome, papers that address these neglected texts in their own right will be preferred. We welcome papers from researchers at every level, including postgraduate students.

Please e-mail your abstract of no more than 200 words to mutedvoices2015@gmail.com by 18th January 2015.

Ένα ακόμη φοιτητικό περιοδικό / One more student academic journal

Πρόκειται για το περιοδικό Hirundo, the McGill Journal of Classical Studies, το οποίο εκδίδεται από τους προπτυχιακούς φοιτητές της Classics Students Association of McGill.

Ένα νέο βιβλίο για τις παραβολές / A new book on parables

Amy-Jill Levine, Short Stories by Jesus. The Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial Rabbi, HarperOne 2014
320 p.
ISBN: 9780061561016
$25.99

Description
The renowned biblical scholar, author of The Misunderstood Jew, and general editor for The Jewish Annotated New Testament interweaves history and spiritual analysis to explore Jesus’ most popular teaching parables, exposing their misinterpretations and making them lively and relevant for modern readers.
Jesus was a skilled storyteller and perceptive teacher who used parables from everyday life to effectively convey his message and meaning. Life in first-century Palestine was very different from our world today, and many traditional interpretations of Jesus’ stories ignore this disparity and have often allowed anti-Semitism and misogyny to color their perspectives.
In this wise, entertaining, and educational book, Amy-Jill Levine offers a fresh, timely reinterpretation of Jesus’ narratives. In Short Stories by Jesus, she analyzes these “problems with parables,” takingreaders back in time to understand how their original Jewish audience understood them. Levine reveals the parables’ connections to first-century economic and agricultural life, social customs and morality, Jewish scriptures and Roman culture. With this revitalized understanding, she interprets these moving stories for the contemporary reader, showing how the parables are not just about Jesus, but are also about us—and when read rightly, still challenge and provoke us two thousand years later.

Amy-Jill Levine is University Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies, E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Professor of New Testament Studies, and Professor of Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt Divinity School and College of Arts and Science in Nashville, Tennessee; affiliated professor at the Centre for the Study of Jewish-Christian Relations at Cambridge; and a self-described "Yankee Jewish feminist who teaches in a predominantly Christian divinity school in the buckle of the Bible
Belt." She is the author of The Misunderstood Jew and the editor of The Jewish Annotated New Testament.

To φρούριο της Απολλωνίας στο Ισραήλ / The fortress of Apollonia in Israel

Crusader remains at Apollonia (photo credit: Shmuel Baram)H ηλεκτρονική έκδοση των The Times of Israel δημοσιεύει ένα ενδιαφέρον άρθρο για το αρχαίο φρούριο της Απολλωνίας και την μετατροπή του σε εθνικό πάρκο.

Μία μελέτη για τη σουμεριακή γλώσσα / A study on the Sumerian language

Gábor Zólyomi, Copular Clauses and Focus Marking in Sumerian, De Gruyter, 2014
De Gruyter Open
ISBN: 978-3-11-040170-7

Description
This work is the first comprehensive description of Sumerian constructions involving a copula. Using around 400 fully glossed examples, it gives a thorough analysis of all uses of the copula, which is one of the least understood and most frequently misinterpreted and consequently mistranslated morphemes in Sumerian.

It starts with a concise introduction into the grammatical structure of Sumerian, followed by a study that is accessible to both linguists and sumerologists, as it applies the terminology of modern descriptive linguistics. It provides the oldest known and documented example of the path of grammaticalization that leads from a copula to a focus marker. It gives the description of Sumerian copular paratactic relative clauses, which make use of an otherwise only scarcely attested relativization strategy. At the end of the book, the reader will have a clear picture about the morphological and syntactic devices used to mark identificational, polarity and sentence focus in Sumerian, one of the oldest documented languages in the world.

Δυο ενδιαφέρουσες εκθέσεις στο Μουσείο Κυκλαδικής Τέχνης / Two interesting exhibitions in the Museum of Cycladic Art

Two interesting reports will be accommodated in the coming months at the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens:

20/11/2014 - 31/5/215

Φρόντιζαν τη διατροφή και το σώμα τους στην αρχαία Ελλάδα; Πώς αντιμετώπιζαν το ζήτημα της δημόσιας υγείας; Τι έκανε ένας αθλητής εάν τραυματιζόταν 2.500 χρόνια πριν; Υπήρχαν χειρουργικά εργαλεία; Πώς χρησιμοποιούσαν το όπιο και άλλες φαρμακευτικές ουσίες και βότανα;

Hygieia. Health, Illness and Treatment from Homer to Galen
from 20/11/2014 until 31/5/2015

This exhibition will provide an overview of the evolution of ancient healing practices, examining the transition from magic-religious healing to rational, scientific medicine, covering the period from approximately 1200 BC to the 3rd century AD.
Some 300 ancient artifacts from 41 Greek and European museums will be on display into the exhibition's three thematic sections: Health, Illness and Treatment. How did ancient Greeks care for their nutrition and bodies? How did they address the issue of public health? What would an athlete do if he got injured 2.500 years ago? Were there any surgical tools? How did they use opium and other pharmaceutical substances and herbs?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Beyond: Death and Afterlife in Ancient Greece
from 11/12/2014 until 8/2/2015

Through the 120 objects from 21 Greek and international museums emerges one of the most important issues that puzzled and continues to concern humans; the fate of the immortal soul after the death of the mortal body. The descriptions in the Homeric epics of the underworld as they were depicted on ancient works of different periods is the starting point of this exhibition.
As epilogue, the Platonic concepts -which mark the shift of perceptions on the divine element- both as development and in contrast to the Homeric beliefs. The show will be divided into 5 thematic sections: The moment of death, Burial Customs, Homeric Hades, Bacchic-Orphic Hades and Platonic Hades.

Ithamar Gruenwald, Apocalyptic and Merkavah Mysticism (Ancient Judaism and Early Christianity 90), Leiden, Brill 2014
ISBN: 9789004279209
€126,00

English description
This is a new and revised edition of the book first published 1980. It contains new introductory and concluding chapters as well as a Bibliography and updated Index. Furthermore, substantial corrections, updates, and changes have been made in the original text. The changes concern matters of language and style, they nuance the line of argumentation, and they update the discussion of major issues. The new chapters fill several scholarly gaps that have opened since the initial publication of this book in 1980. The new Introductory Chapter explores new venues and issues in the study and assessment of the Hekhalot literature and relevant passages in apocalyptic literature, and this in light of epistemological and ontological considerations. The Concluding Chapter discusses the ritual praxis of the experience of the Hekhalot mystics and its affitnity to magic, and this in terms of new approaches to ritual theory.

Δύο Καρυάτιδες φύλακες στον τάφο της Αμφίπολης / Two caryatids protecting the new tomb of Amphipolis

Two caryatids were discovered standing in front of the second entrance of the tomb in Amphipolis. The face of the one on the west side of the entrance is well preserved. Both statues stretch their hand in an apotropaic gesture. Moreover, in front of them stands a wall that protected the second entrance of the tomb (a similar one was found in front of the first entrance). The two statues are made of marble from Thasos, they bear traces of red and blue colour, and they are of the same technique as the Spinx statues found at the main entrance of the monument.

Η Ιουδαϊκή ελπίδα μετά το 70 μ.Χ.: Δ΄ Έσδρα / Jewish Hope after 70 AD: 4 Esdra

Στην ιστοσελίδα The Bible and Interpretation η Hindy Najman (Yale University) δημοσιεύει ένα σύντομο κείμενό της για τον τρόπο που διαχειρίζεται την ελπίδα για το μέλλον του Ιουδαϊσμού το κείμενο του Δ΄ Έσδρα.

"The path forward for Israel after the second destruction, this text seems to say, lies not in the rebuilding of the Temple, but in the reconstitution of Torah as a corpus of writings, some intended for all, some for the wise alone. The textualization of Judaism will be its salvation. But this salvation, as Ezra’s encounter with lamenting Zion tells us, will never forget Israel’s losses."

H Διδαχή στην Huffington Post / Didache in Huffington Post
