For the 2019 meeting of our group in Warsaw two sessions are scheduled

a) An open session where papers on any topic within the range of the interests of the research group are welcome.

b) A session focusing on the Jewish Diaspora communities in the cities of the Graeco-Roman world. More particularly, we invite papers that address methodological questions regarding the identification and study of archaeological and epigraphic evidence related to Jewish presence in the Diaspora, as well as papers that deal with particular aspects of history, development, organisation and life of these Jewish communities, their network system and relations to Palestine or their interaction with early Christian groups.

EABS is excited to announce its eighth Graduate Symposium, which will take place in Cluj-Napoca, March 18-20, 2016.  The symposium, which seeks to engender a supportive atmosphere for dialogue across a variety of biblical studies fields and subfields (Hebrew Scriptures, OT, NT, DSS, early Christianity, Septuagint studies, second temple Judaism, Rabbinics, reception history, methodologies, etc.), welcomes PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers to present on a topic related to their research area(s).

Participants may format their presentation according to their preference: paper, seminar discussion, workshop session, poster or another form.

Every abstract will be reviewed by a team of scholars who will give feedback and suggestions for improvement, if necessary. Our goal is to assist in developing the abstracts to the best possible form and encourage the authors of the best abstracts to submit them to research seminars of the 2016 EABS Annual Meeting and to enter their papers for the EABS Student Prize.

During the symposium each student will get 20 minutes to submit his/her paper, which will be followed by an extended discussion. The EABS Graduate Symposium looks forward to welcoming some senior scholars, including the EABS president who will offer feedback and share from their own experience in the field. In addition, the symposium looks forward to continuing its tradition of holding a joint trans-Atlantic session with graduate students from the University of Emory.

EABS Research Grants

Starting in 2014, the EABS are making available two annually awarded research grants of 400 Euros each.

The EABS Research Grants are intended to support well-defined research projects of high quality in Biblical Studies and related areas, by enabling their authors to participate in the EABS Annual Conference, present papers related to their research, and establish or enhance working relationships with other researchers in their field.

As a rule, every year EABS will award two Research Grants of €400 each. It is possible for a team consisting of two EABS members to apply for a Research Grant together, provided that they meet all the eligibility criteria (see below), but the amount awarded will remain the same.

The review panel reserves the right not to award a grant in a given year.

In 2014, deadline to submit a grant application is November 1, 2014. 

EABS’ Annual Meeting will take place in Cordoba, Spain, July 12-15, 2015.

GRAECO-ROMAN SOCIETY AND THE NEW TESTAMENT

Description of the Group 

The research group focuses a) on various aspects of the social life of the Graeco-Roman world (e.g. household networks and religion, kinship, friendship and other relationships, slavery, prostitution, social and geographical mobility, social groups, everyday life in Graeco-Roman cities etc.) that consist part of the socio-historical context of the New Testament texts and could therefore provide insight into them, and b) on artifacts from the Graeco-Roman world (e.g. inscriptions, papyri and archeological findings) that can shed light to various aspects of the New Testament texts and events. Papers that present interdisciplinary approaches to the topics under discussion and offer new insights and fresh interpretations of New Testament texts placing them within their socio-historical context are welcome.

CFP VIENNA 2014

In 2014 there will be a joint conference of the EABS with the ISBL in Vienna, Austria (July 6-10). All paper proposals will be submitted on the SBL conference pageor on EABS webpage.

Two sessions are scheduled for the meeting in Vienna:

 • an open session where papers on any topic within the range of the interests of the research group are welcome.

 • a session focused on “Papyri and the New Testament”. Since Vienna’s Department of Papyri houses one of the largest papyrus collections of the world, a special session is devoted to insights offered by Greek, Coptic and Latin papyri and ostraca into the religious, social and political context of Christians and Jews in the first centuries CE. We welcome papers that deal with private letters, administrative and legal documents, religion and magic; as well as papyrological evidence for the development of authoritative scripture: text collections, scribes, copyists and literacy.

CFP: EABS 6th Graduate Symposium

Sixth Graduate Symposium: April 11-13, 2014 in Thessaloniki, Greece

EABS is excited to announce its sixth graduate symposium, which will take place in Thessaloniki on the weekend of April 11-13, 2014.  The symposium, which seeks to engender a  supportive atmosphere for dialogue across a variety of biblical and related studies (OT, NT, DSS, early Christianity, rabbinics, etc.), invites PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers to present on a topic related to their research area.  Participants may format their presentation as they see fit: paper, seminar discussion, workshop session, or another form.

This year we especially encourage you to propose posters! You do not need to send a complete poster as a proposal, although this would be appreciated.

The EABS Graduate Symposium is happy to welcome a few senior scholars, including the EABS president, Professor Reimund Bieringer (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven), who will offer feedback and share their own

experiences in the field.  In addition, we look forward to continuing the tradition of holding a joint session with graduate students from the University of Alberta.

Candidates should submit their abstracts and/or posters of no more than 300 words to students@eabs.net no later than January 15th, 2014. Please mention the preferred format in the abstract (i.e. paper, workshop, pre-circulated paper, discussion etc.). Papers should fit time slots of 20 minutes.

Two sessions are scheduled for the meeting of 2013 in Leipzig:

1. a session where papers on any topic within the range of the interests of the research group as described above are welcome;
2. following the significant attendance of the session dedicated to the inscriptions and the NT in Amsterdam a session focused again on “Inscriptions and the New Testament” is being scheduled. Inscriptions have always provided useful evidence not only for understanding the New Testament vocabulary but also for illuminating events and situations described or implied in the New Testament texts. The ever growing epigraphic data provides the biblical scholarly research with a valuable pool of information that can be used through interdisciplinary readings in reconstructing the socio-historical context of the NT texts and of the early Christian communities. Therefore, papers that deal a) with methodological issues regarding the constructive use of the epigraphic data in the NT exegesis, b) with the evaluation of the work done in this field by previous scholars (e.g. A. Deissmann, R. Horsley etc), c) with particular cases of utilization of the epigraphic data in the lexicographical research of the NT, and d) with the use of the inscriptions in illuminating the social, political or religious background of the NT, are welcome.

Η ετήσια συνάντηση της European Association of Biblical Studies θα λάβει χώρα σε συνεργασία με τη Society of Biblical Society στο Άμστερνταμ το καλοκαίρι του 2012 (22-26 Ιουλίου).

Φέτος η ομάδα Graeco-Roman World and the New Testament, στην οποία έχω την χαρά να είμαι υπεύθυνη, οργανώνει δύο συνεδρίες: α) μία με εισηγήσεις που κινούνται στο γενικότερο χώρο της ιστορίας χρόνων της Κ.Δ. και β) μία με εισηγήσεις των οποίων η θεματική θα είναι η αξιοποίηση των επιγραφών στην ερμηνεία της Κ.Δ. EABS Thessaloniki 8-11 August 2011

Την Πέμπτη 11 Αυγούστου 2011 ολοκληρώθηκαν οι εργασίες του Διεθνούς Συνεδρίου της European Association of Biblical Studies που φέτος έλαβε χώρα στη Θεσσαλονίκη. Στο συνέδριο συμμετείχαν περίπου 250 σύνεδροι και ακροατές και διαβάστηκαν περίπου 200 εισηγήσεις, μερικές των οποίων και από Έλληνες συναδέλφους, οι οποίες κάλυπταν όλες τις περιοχές της βιβλικής έρευνας. Η φετινή συνάντηση αποτελεί τη μεγαλύτερη σε αριθμό διοργάνωση της εταιρείας.

Η επόμενη συνάντηση θα πραγματοποιηθεί σε συνεργασία με την Society of Biblical Literature στο Άμστερνταμ της Ολλανδίας στο διάστημα 22-26 Ιουλίου 2012.

To συνέδριο της EABS στη Θεσσαλονίκη / Τhe EABS Conference in Thessaloniki

Όπως αναφέραμε σε παλαιότερες αναρτήσεις, στο διάστημα 8 έως 11 Αυγούστου 2011 θα λάβει χώρα στη Θεσσαλονίκη η διεθνής ετήσια συνάντηση της European Association of Biblical Studies. Σε αυτήν προβλέπεται να συμμετάσχει μεγάλος αριθμός βιβλικών επιστημόνων από την Ευρώπη, την Αμερική και το Ισραήλ. Παρόντες θα είναι και πολλοί επιστήμονες (βιβλικοί, αρχαιολόγοι, πατρολόγοι και θρησκειολόγοι)  από την Ελλάδα. Η συνάντηση θα λάβει χώρα στο ξενοδοχείο Porto Palace, ενώ η εναρκτήρια συνεδρίαση θα γίνει στο Βυζαντινό Μουσείο. Στις επόμενες μέρες θα ανακοινώσουμε περισσότερες λεπτομέρειες για το πρόγραμμα.

Για όσους ενδιαφέρονται να παρακολουθήσουν το συνέδριο, θα πρέπει να εγγραφούν στο συνέδριο. Οι τιμές, καθώς επίσης και πολλές άλλες χρήσιμες πληροφορίες, έχουν ανακοινωθεί στη σχετική ιστοσελίδα της Εταιρίας και στο ιστολόγιο του συνεδρίου.

Πρόκειται για μία εξαιρετική ευκαιρία, καθώς είναι η πρώτη φορά που φιλοξενείται στη Θεσσαλονίκη μία τόσο μεγάλη διεθνής διοργάνωση.

EABS Colloquium: Isaiah and the Empire

Μπορεί βέβαια η Νέα Ζηλανδία να είναι αρκετά μακριά για να παρακολουθήσουμε το σεμινάριο σχετικά με το βιβλίο του Ησαΐα, αναφέρουμε όμως την είδηση για ενημέρωση των αναγνωστών του ιστολογίου όσον αφορά στις ακαδημαϊκές συναντήσεις ανά τον κόσμο με βιβλικό περιεχόμενο. Η συνάντηση θα λάβει χώρα στο διάστημα 14-15 Φεβρουαρίου στο Auckland (Laidlaw-Carey Graduate School) και το θέμα της θα είναι:

"Isaiah and Empire"

This colloquium (sponsored by Laidlaw-Carey Graduate School in Auckland, New Zealand) will explore cultural and theological implications of aspects of the book of Isaiah in the context of empire. Potential papers might include, but are by no means limited to:

readings of particular texts in the light of ancient imperial contexts

•studies of the redaction history of Isaiah
•Isaiah (or a particular text) in contemporary “imperial” or post-colonial contexts

Παραθέτω την πρόσκληση συμμετοχής στο σεμινάριο της ομάδας Graeco-Roman Society and the New Testament που φέτος θα έχει ως θέμα της την "Ελληνορωμαϊκή Θεσσαλονίκη" και μάλιστα σε σχέση με τις αφηγήσεις των Πράξεων και τις Α΄ και Β΄ Θεσσαλονικείς. Οι ενδιαφερόμενοι μπορούν να επικοινωνήσουν στις ηλεκτρονικές διευθύνσεις που δίνονται στην πρόσκληση. Όσοι επιθυμούν να ενημερωθούν για τις υπόλοιπες ομάδες εργασίες, μπορούν να πατήσουν εδώ.

CALL FOR PAPERS
The main topic of the Thessaloniki meeting will be “ Graeco-Roman Thessaloniki”. Papers presenting aspects of the social, political and religious situation in Thessaloniki in the first Christian centuries (and esp. in the 1st c. CE) and therefore contributing to the understanding of the socio-historical background of the Pauline community of the city and the New Testament texts that refer to it (Acts and 1 & 2 Thessalonians) are welcome. In Thessaloniki the “ Graeco-Roman world” group will work together with the “Theology and Theologizing in the Pauline Literature” group, which will devote its session to the Thessalonian correspondence. The session(s) of the “Graeco-Roman Society and the New Testament” will thus cover the first part of the joint sessions and offer an historical introduction to the discussion of the two epistles to the Thessalonians. Paper abstracts should be sent to Prof. Raimund Bieringer (Reimund.Bieringer@theo.kuleuven.be) or Dr. Ekaterini Tsalampouni (etsala@past.auth.gr) by 15th February 2011.

Έχοντας γυρίσει αισίως στην πατρίδα από τη ζεστή αλλά όμορφη Εσθονία θα σας παρουσιάσω σήμερα τις περιλήψεις των εισηγήσεων που παρουσιάστηκαν στο πλαίσιο της δικής μου ερευνητικής ομάδας με τον τίτλο "Graeco-Roman World" . Ήταν μία συνεργασία μεταξύ της Εuropean Assocation of Biblical Studies (EABS) και της Society of Biblical Literature (SBL). Η συνεδρία χωρίστηκε σε δύο μέρη. Στο πρώτο μέρος τα θέματα είχαν περισσότερο να κάνουν με το ιδιαίτερο θέμα της ερευνητικής ομάδας της EABS που φέτος ήταν, όπως ήδη γνωρίζετε από παλαιότερες αναρτήσεις η οικογένεια και η φιλία ως πραγματικότητα και μεταφορά στον ελληνορωμαϊκό κόσμο και στην Κ.Δ. (Family and Friendship as Reality and Metaphor in the Graeco-Roman World and in the New Testament).

H πρώτη εισήγηση ήταν της Karin Neutel (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen) και θέμα της ήταν οι μεικτοί γάμοι στην κοινότητα της Κορίνθου ("Married to an Unbeliever: Religious Choice and Family Ties According to Paul"). Η ομιλήτρια ασχολήθηκε με τις σχετικές μαρτυρίες από την Α΄ Κορ, από όπου φαίνεται σαφώς ότι ο Παύλος αναφέρεται σε θρησκευτικά μεικτές ομάδες. Ο Παύλοε ενθαρρύνει τους χριστιανούς άνδρες και γυναίκες να παραμείνουν παντρεμένοι με τους / τις εθνικούς συζύγους τους και να ζήσουν έτσι σε οίκους που συναπαρτίζονταν από χριστιανούς και εθνικούς. Αυτή η θέση του Παύλου είναι ιδιαίτερα ενδιαφέρουσα. Ο Παύλος φαίνεται να υιοθετεί μία πολύ ρεαλιστική αποδοχή των μεικτών γάμων και η θέση του αποτελεί μία από τις διαφορετικές στάσεις του αρχέγονου Χριστιανισμού απέναντι στην οικογένεια. Επιπλέον το έμμεσο μήνυμα ότι ο σύζυγος και η σύζυγός του μπορούν να επιλέξουν διαφορετικές θρησκείες ανεξάρτητα ο ένας από τον άλλο μπορεί να έχει μία ιδιαίτερη σημασία για την οικογένεια του σήμερα. Στη συζήτηση, που ακολούθησε, επισημάνθηκε ότι αυτή η στάση του Παύλου ίσως συνδέεται άμεσα με τις εσχατολογικές προσδοκίες του και τη βεβαιότητα για την επερχόμενη προσδοκία.

Η δεύτερη εισήγηση ήταν η δική μου και θέμα της ήταν ο ελληνορωμαϊκός τόπος της φιλίας στο κατά Λουκάν ευαγγέλιο ("The Greco-Roman Topos of Friendship in the Gospel of Luke"). Στο πρώτο μέρος της εισήγησης συζήτησα σε επίπεδο πηγών και σύνταξης των χωρίων του κατά Λουκάν που αναφέρονται άμεσα και έμμεσα στη φιλία. Από αυτή την ανάλυση προκύπτει ότι στο κείμενο του κατά Λουκάν υπάρχει μία τάση ο συγγραφέας να προσθέτει την αναφορά σε φίλους ακόμη κι όταν οι πηγές του δεν έχουν μια τέτοια αναφορά. Επειδή όμως είναι σήμερα αδύνατο πλέον να γνωρίζουμε τι προέρχεται από τις πηγές και τι από κάποια συντακτική φάση του ευαγγελίου ή τον ίδιο τον ευαγγελιστή, προτείνεται μία περισσότερο συγχρονική προσέγγιση του κειμένου, όπου αντιμετωπίζεται το κείμενο ως τελικό αποτέλεσμα στο οποίο ο συγγραφέας επιλέγει να προσθέσει ή να διατηρήσει τις αναφορές σε φίλους. Για να κατανοηθεί η σημασία των φίλων στο κατά Λουκάν στο δεύτερο μέρος παρουσίασα βασικές πτυχές της φιλίας στον ελληνορωμαϊκό κόσμο. Αντίθετα από ό,τι συνήθως γίνεται στηρίχθηκα κυρίως σε παπύρους, επιγραφές , μύθους, παροιμίες και γνώμες των πρώτων αιώνων μ.Χ., οι μαρτυρίες των οποίων μας δίνουν μία εικόνα αρκετά διαφορετική από εκείνη των φιλοσοφικών κειμένων της εποχής. Πρόκειται για μία περισσότερο ρεαλιστική εικόνα η οποία φαίνεται να αποτελεί το υπόβαθρο των σχετικών περικοπών του Λουκά. Στοιχεία αυτής της εικόνας δίνουν τη δυνατότητα να κατανοηθούν τα σχετικά με τους φίλους χωρία του ευαγγελίου και να δοθεί μία νέα ερμηνεία σε κάποια από αυτά. Στη συζήτηση που ακολούθησε το ενδιαφέρον επικεντρώθηκε στην πιθανή σχέση φιλίας και πατρωνείας και ποια στοιχεία της εικόνας της φιλίας μέσα στα κείμενα που παρουσιάστηκαν στην εισήγησημ είναι ρωμαϊκά και ποια ελληνικά.

Η επόμενη εισήγηση ήταν του Valeryi Alikin (St. Petersburg Christian University) o οποίος ασχολήθηκε με τις πρωινές συνάξεις των χριστιανών μέσα το πλαίσιο του ελληνορωμαϊκού κόσμου ("The Morning Gathering of Christians in the Context of the Graeco-Roman World"). O ομιλητής συζήτησε τις μαρτυρίες για τις πρωινές συνάξεις των χριστιανών κυρίως κατά το 2ο αι. Τέτοιες πρωινές λατρευτικές συγκεντρώσεις δεν ήταν κάτι το ασυνήθιστο. Αρχαιολογικές και φιλολογικές μαρτυρίες βεβαιώνουν την ύπαρξη τέτοιων συνάξεων και σε άλλες λατρείες. Αυτές οι χριστιανικές συναντήσεις αποτελούν τον αντίλογο λοιπόν σε ανάλογες συναντήσεις των εθνικών. Παραμένει ωστόσο ανοικτό το ζήτημα γιατί οι χριστιανοί της Βιθυνίας προτίμησαν την Κυριακή για αυτές τις λατρευτικές τους συγκεντρώσεις. Η συζήτηση στη συνέχεια επικεντρώθηκε στο πρόβλημα της μέτρησης των ημερών και του χρόνου κατά την αρχαιότητα, καθώς ο ομιλητής στην εισήγησή του υποστήριξε ότι η νέα ημέρα στα ευαγγέλια αρχίζει όχι από το απόγευμα της προηγούμενης αλλά από το πρωί, όταν οι άνθρωποι ξυπνούν. Η θέση του αυτή προκάλεσε μία ενδιααφέρουσα συζήτηση καθώς αναφέρθηκαν από το ακροατήριο μία σειρά από παραδείγματα της Κ.Δ. τα οποία φαίνεται να οδηγούν σε αντίθετα συμπεράσματα.
Μετά το διάλειμμα ο ομιλητής ήταν ο Daniel Johansson (University of Ediburgh), ο οποίος σύγκρινε τις ιστορίες που υπάρχουν στην αρχαία γραμματεία για τη διάβαση θάλασσας από ηγεμόνες (π.χ. Ξέρξη, Αντίοχο Δ΄, Καλιγούλα) ("The Greco-Roman Significance of Walking on the Water"). O ομιλητής ξεκίνησε από την παρατήρηση της Adela Yabro Collins ότι πίσω από την περιγραφή του περίπατου του Ιησού επί της θαλάσσης στο Μκ 6, 45-52 κρύβονται μοτίβα γνωστά τόσο από την ιουδαϊκή όσο και από τη χριστιανική παράδοση κι ότι σαφώς αυτή η θεολογική σημασία του θαύματος είναι να τονίσει τη μεσσιανικότητα του Ιησού. Ο ομιλητής ανέπτυξε περαιτέρω αυτήν τη θέση παρουσιάζοντας μαρτυρίες από τις πηγές για συγκεκριμένους ηγεμόνες και ως σκοπό είχε να τονίσει τη θεϊκή τους ιδιότητα. Επομένως η παράσταση αυτή, γνωστή τόσο στον ιουδαϊκό όσο και στον εθνικό κόσμο, οδηγούσε τους αναγνώστες του ευαγγελίου στο συμπέρασμα της θεϊκής ιδιότητας του Ιησού. Στη συζήτηση τονίστηκε ότι η υιοθέτηση ενός τέτοιου μοτίβου πολύ πιθανόν να αποτελεί ένα στοιχείο της αντι-αυτοκρατορικής τάσης και κριτικής του κατά Μάρκον, η οποία ήδη έχει επισημανθεί από τους σύγχρονους μελετητές. Στη θέση των κυρίων της εποχής εκείνης που διεκδικούν μία θεϊκή ιδιότητα χωρίς να τους ανήκει (ας σημειωθεί ότι σε καμιά περίπτωση ηγεμόνων που πέρασαν τη θάλασσα δεν έχουμε πραγματική διάβαση), το ευαγγέλιο αντιπαραθέτει τον Ιησού που είναι πραγματικός Θεός.

Τελευταία ήταν η εισήγηση της Phylis Bird, (Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary) η οποία ασχολήθηκε με το θέμα της "ιερής πορνείας", το οποίο στα βιβλικά κείμενα συνδέεται με τη χαναανιτική θρησκεία ("Lucian's Last Laugh: The Origins of "Sacred Prostitution" at Byblos"). Η αρχαιότερη θύραθεν σύνδεση της ιερής πορνείας με την περιοχή γίνεται από τον Λουκιανό (2ος αι. μ.Χ.). Συγκρίνοντας τη μαρτυρία του με εκείνη του Ηροδότου, ο οποίος παρουσιάζει μία ανάλογη μαρτυρία για τη Βαβυλώνα η ομιλήτρια υποστήριξε ότι ο Λουκιανός παρωδεί το κείμενο του Ηροδότου μετατρέποντας τη Βαβυλώνα σε Βύβλο και μεταφέροντας εκεί πληροφορίες του Ηροδότου από άλλες περιοχές αποδίδοντάς τες μάλιστα στην εκεί λατρεία. Υποστήριξε επίσης ότι συχνά αγνοείται ότι η εικόνα της πορνείας σε θρησκευτική συνάφεια μέσα στα βιβλικά κείμενα είναι μεταφορά κι ότι η έννοια της "ιερής πορνείας" έτσι, όπως υποστηρίχθηκε στη Δύση, αποτελεί ουσιαστικά ιδεολογικό κατασκεύασμα της δυτικής σκέψης από το Διαφωτισμό κι εξής χωρίς να στηρίζεται ουσιαστικά σε πηγές. Η συζήτηση που ακολούθησε περιστράφηκε κυρίως γύρω από την τελευταία θέση της ομιλήτριας, η οποία έδωσε διευκρινιστικές απαντήσεις και παρουσίασε συγκεκριμένα παραδείγματα.

Η συνεδρία του απογεύματος της Δευτέρας 26/7 που παρακολούθησα ήταν αφιερωμένη σε επιμέρους ζητήματα των παύλειων επιστολών (SBL Paul and Pauline Literature Section).

H πρώτη εισήγηση ήταν του Francois Tolmie (University of Free State) και έφερε τον τίτλο "Angels as arguments? The rhetorical function of references to angels in the main letters to Paul". Αφετηρία της εισήγησης ήταν το ερώτημα που διατυπώνεται και στον τίτλο της εισήγησης, ποιο ρόλο μπορεί να διαδραματίζουν από απόψεως ρητορικής του κειμένου οι αναφορές σε αγγέλους μέσα στα παύλεια κείμενα. O ομιλητής παρουσίασε και σχολίασε όλες τις αναφορές σε αγγέλους που απαντούν στις παύλειες επιστολές (Ρωμ, 1 Κορ, 2 Κορ, Γαλ). Κατέληξε στο συμπέρασμα ότι ο Παύλος ποτέ δε χρησιμοποιεί τους αγγέλους ως κύριο επιχείρημα μέσα στις επιστολές του. Επιπλέον ο απόστολος αναφέρεται σε διάφορους ρόλους που μπορεί αυτοί οι άγγελοι να αναλαμβάνουν ή στα χαρακτηριστικά τους. Από ρητορικής άποψης ο ομιλητής υποστήριξε ότι οι άγγελοι συνήθως εμφανίζονται σε συνάφειες οι οποίες μπορούν να θεωρηθούν ότι χαρακτηρίζονται από την υπερβολή.

Στη συνέχεια ο Thomas r. Blanton (Luther College) ασχολήθηκε με το θέμα της ανταποδοτικότητας στον ελληνορωμαϊκό κόσμο και μάλιστα όσον αφορά σε συμβολικά αγαθά ("Economies of Symbolic Goods? Pauline Epistles as Test Cases"). O ομιλητής αξιοποίησε την ιδέα του Pierre Bourdieu για το "συμβολικό κεφάλαιο", όπου ως κεφάλαιο ορίζεται κάθε πολιτισμικό αγαθό που μπορεί να ανταλλαγεί με άλλο πολιτισμικό αγαθό (υλικά αγαθά αλλά και υπηρεσίες). Το "συμβολικό κεφάλαιο" υπάρχει μόνο μέσα στην αφήγηση. Στην περίπτωση του Παύλου αυτό αφορά στην υπόσχεση για λύτρωση από την κρίση κατά τα έσχατα καθώς και την μελλοντική ύπαρξη στην ουράνια σφαίρα. Έτσι η υπόσχεση αντιμετωπίζεται ως ανταλλάξιμο αγαθό για τα υλικά αγαθά ή υπηρεσίες. Ο ομιλητής παρέπεμψε στο Ρωμ 15, 27, όπου ο Παύλος εξισώνει τα "πνευματικά" με τα "υλικά" και βεβαιώνει ότι μία προσφορά του πρώτου θα ανταμοιφθεί με μία δωρεά του δευτέρου. Στο 2 Κορ 9, 6-15 ο Παύλος υποστηρίζει ότι η απολαβή των απερίγραπτων αγαθών του Θεού (σωτηρία από την τελική κρίση) θα πρέπει να αναγκάσει τους Κορίνθιους να σπεύσουν στη βοήθεια της εκκλησίας των Ιεροσολύμων.

Η τελευταία εισήγηση ήταν του Edward Pillar ("'Whom he raised from the Dead': Exploring the Anti-imperial Context from Paul's First Statement of Resurrection"). O ομιλητής διερεύνησε στην εισήγησή του ποια απήχηση μπορεί να είχε το κήρυγμα της ανάστασης στο αυτοκρατορικό ακροατήριο του ευαγγελίου. Υποστήριξε ότι όταν ο Παύλος στη Θεσσαλονίκη έκανε λόγο για την ανάσταση ουσιαστικά ασκούσε κριτική στην αυτοκρατορία και κυρίως υπέσκαπτε τις θέσεις της ρωμαϊκής αυτοκρατορίας για την κυριαρχία της επάνω στους υπηκόους της και την ιδέα της παντοδυναμίας της.
