Though the theme of hope occurs only six times in Hebrews, its importance cannot be denied. In all the passages where it appears, the eschatological dimension that the word gradually acquired in the Septuagint and in the intertestamental Literature is effective. These passages are themselves of great importance within the epistle and are fully consistent with its main purpose. They reflect its major tensions and issues, taking place both within the circle of the Word and the conception of the renewed access to God the text wants to express and to promote.

Gilbert Dahan, "Erreurs textuelles, fautes de traduction et enrichissement herméneutique dans l’exégèse chrétienne de la bible au Moyen Âge," 197-216

How did the exegetes of the Middle Ages react to the divergences they found in the biblical texts they commented on ? A tradition of critical study of the Latin translation text (Vulgate) developed through the Middle Ages and expanded noticeably in the correctories (correctoria) of the 13th century ; these correctories collected the variae lectiones and made use of the Hebrew and Greek texts. On the other hand, since Jerome, the pertinence of the Latin translation had been examined, with reference to the Hebrew and Greek originals. At the beginning of the 14th century, Nicholas of Lyre studied the differences between the Vulgate and the Hebrew Bible. A century later, Lorenzo Valla made a similar work on the New Testament. From these different works, we try to determine the attitude of the exegetes regarding these divergences and we note the presence of a well developed critical approach.

Christology could appear an obstacle to interfaith dialogue because of its claims to absoluteness. But Christianity could open itself to interfaith dialogue from the very starting-point of the affirmation of the unity of God and humankind in Jesus Christ : Jesus’ own monotheism, seen in a historical-critical way, links Christianity with the other Western religions, whilst the mystical Christology of the Christ of the kerygma is a bridge towards the cosmic religious consciousness of the Eastern religions.

The Book of Job contains two quite astonishing passages where Job speaks of the condition of the poor. The first is Job 24 :1-12, where he demonstrates an extreme compassion for their predicament ; the second is Job 30 :1-8, where, having displayed his charity, he then exhibits a hefty contempt for them. This ambiguous attitude is problematic and raises the question of the true relationship between Job and the poor.

The intent of the present study is to analyze the concept of the kingdom/reign of God in Luke-Acts from the standpoint of ecclesiology. It thus focuses on an issue that is rarely studied in conjunction with the notion of the kingdom in Lucan studies, namely, the identity of the believing community. More specifically, it considers questions of identity concerning both the recipients and the beneficiaries of the basileia itself, as well as of its proclamation. This article suggests that Luke is highly interested in these matters. The vast majority of occurrences of basileia in Luke-Acts confirm this, as do some key occurrences (e.g., the very first mention of the term, in Lk 1 :33, and the occurrences that form an inclusio in Acts, Ac 1 :3,6; 28 :23,31).

Faced by prophecy, hermeneutics feels duty bound to show a polite hospitality which obliges philosophy to undertake a critical examination of some of its own ideas, which can then appear as hyper-rationalist prejudices. However, isn’t it part of the philosopher’s responsibility to conduct himself without arrogance to a parallel examination of the vicissitudes familiar to the reception of prophetic discourse, a reception seemingly enthralled by the declaration of political and cosmic catastrophes, but also sensitive to the poetic depiction of a meta-political hope ? We will show, following Ricœur, that a hermeneutical critique of prophecy is legitimate and justified by the reading of prophetic literature itself.

It is striking to note that in John 2-5 we see Jesus performing signs which are unusual in Jewish tradition and encountering non-Jews and syncretising Jews. The postulate defended here is that the author of the Fourth Gospel suggests in this way that Jesus – having encountered them on their home ground – surpasses those in whom Samaritans or pagans placed their trust : Dionysus and his cult (John 2 :1-11), Jacob and the temple of Gerizim (John 4), and the gods or at least cults of healing (John 5 :1-9).

In the field of theology, exegesis – more than the theology suspected of adopting too speculative an approach – was a privileged companion of Paul Ricœur. But within this preference (which he never denied) lie two distinct hermeneutical approaches, which take their turn over time : the first, largely inspired by Mircea Eliade, makes much of the notion of symbol ; the second, grounded in the theory of metaphor, better allows us to see the biblical texts as literature and, thanks to a novel coupling of “the poetic” and “the possible world”, to connect literature and ethics. We will try to show in this paper that this second perspective gives more room than the first to theological discourse and to the dialectic which constitutes theology and exegesis.

Paul Ricœur’s work disturbs, as does any work that questions the customary classification of disciplines. Does this philosophical work make too much room for religion and theology? The reproach of “crypto-theology” against its author is unfair, since he never hides it. The strength of this reproach is indicative of a concept of laity different from that of the French legislator and which was not defended by the author himself. It also betrays a strange ignorance of the pragmatic and institutional conditions of all creative thinking. In order to better do justice to this work, to its disciplinary “departures” and to their possible cultural effects, we will use the notion of field rather than discipline. If applied to philosophy and theology, could it not help avoid such an antagonistic view of their relationship?

Archaeological context, writing medium, layout, palaeography, orthography, divisions, annotations, and the redaction of these manuscripts must be diligently studied, for each of these aspects may influence our understanding of the literary works under consideration.

The relation between Paul and Judaism is in the course of being re-examined. The traditional interpretation of Paul’s letters, which identified a rupture between him and Israel and its national codes has been replaced, for a generation now, by a different way to consider the relations between Paul and the Jewish-biblical faith and traditions. To put it briefly, Paul as a renegade and traitor of Israel has been replaced by the « Rabbi of Tarsus » (Lapide) or the « good Jew » (Nanos). We owe this paradigm-shift in particular to the exegetical current called the New Perspective on Paul – a paradigm which is not without blinkers and blind spots : for instance, what do we make of the anti-Paulinism that broke out in his lifetime in the churches of Judea, blaming the apostle for teaching « apostasy from Moses » (Acts 21.21) ? – a history which should not be eclipsed by those who wish to discover in all their complexity the social identities which are constructed by Paul’s writings.

Το τμήμα που είναι αφιερωμένο στην Π.Δ. μαρτυρεί μία καλή γνώση των όσων ήταν γνωστά κατά το 1869 σχετικά με τα αρχαία ιουδαϊκά συγγράμματα. Η μητέρα της συγγραφέως ήταν μεταφράστρια της Π.Δ. στη σλαβονική και η ίδια η συγγραφέας είχε ένα γιο, ο οποίος ως επίσκοπος δραστηριοποιούνταν στο χώρο της απολογητικής. Ο συγγραφέας υποστηρίζει ότι υπάρχει μία εξέλιξη στις ιουδαϊκές ερμηνείες του Παύλου από τον πρώιμο 19ο αι. μέχρι τον ύστερο 20ο. Για να το αποδείξει παρουσιάζει το έργο κάποιων Ιουδαίων συγγραφέων όπως των Joseph Salvador, Martin Buber, Leo Baeck και Daniel Boyarin. Παρατηρούμε μία σταδιακή ένταξη του Παύλου στον Ιουδαϊκό κόσμο, μία ένταξη που πέρασε μέσα από μία εσωτερική ιουδαϊκή σύγκρουση με τον Ιουδαϊσμό, μία αντιπαράθεση με τους χριστιανούς θεολόγους και συνδέεται επίσης με ευρύτερα ζητήματα πολιτικής θεολογίας.
