Πώς να εξαφανίσεις τη μνήμη ενός αυτοκράτορα / How to make the memory of an emperor disappear

H πρακτική της damnatio memoriae ήταν μία διαδεδομένη πρακτική στον αρχαίο κόσμο κι εφαρμοζόταν με πολλούς τρόπους. Ένα χαρακτηριστικό παράδειγμα ήταν η απόσβεση του ονόματος του προσώπου που είχε πέσει σε δυσμένεια. Ο Δομιτιανός ήταν ένα τέτοιο πρόσωπο και μετά τη δολοφονία του το όνομά του σβήστηκε από πολλές επιγραφές της αυτοκρατορίας και οι προτομές και τα αγάλματά του αποσύρθηκαν από το δημόσιο χώρο. Στην ιστοσελίδα του Penn Museum παρουσιάζεται ένα τέτοιο παράδειγμα απάλειψης της μνήμης του συγκεκριμένου αυτοκράτορα. Πρόκειται για μία επιγραφή από τους Puteoli, η οποία απαριθμούσε τα αξιώματα του Δομιτιανού και η οποία αποξέσθηκε μετά από τη σχετική απόφαση της Συγκλήτου, ενώ στην πίσω πλευρά λαξεύτηκε παράσταση του Τραϊανού:
