Οι μέλισσες ήταν πάντοτε σημαντική για την ανθρώπινη ζωή και το μέλι της χρησιμοποιήθηκε ως τροφή και φάρμακο με μαγικές ιδιότητες. Δεν προκαλεί, λοιπόν, έκπληξη ότι το μικρό αυτό έντομο εμφανίζεται συχνά σε νομίσματα των αρχαίων ελληνικών πόλεων της Ελλάδας και τη Μ.Ασίας.
