Ο Pieter van der Horst δημοσιεύει ένα σύντομο άρθρο στην ιστοσελίδα aeon σχετικά με έναν κριτικό Ιουδαίο στοχαστή των μ. του 9ου αι., τον Ḥiwi al-Balkhi, στο Balkh του σημερινού Αφγανιστάν. Ο Ḥiwi συζητά κριτικά τα προβλήματα που δημιουργεί στον αναγνώστη η βία και η σκληρότητα της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης. Το έργο του έχει χαθεί και διασώζονται τμήματά του μόνο στις αντικρούσεις του από τους αντιπάλους του.
