Το βιβλίο πραγματεύεται μια ιδέα με έντονη παρουσία και επίδραση στη δυτική πολιτική σκέψη, την ιδέα της απολύτρωσης από τα δεινά και την καταπίεση· μια εγκόσμια λύτρωση, απελευθέρωση, επανάσταση. Ο συγγραφέας προσπάθησε να περιγράψει τις απαρχές αυτής της ιδέας στην ιστορία της απολύτρωσης του λαού του Ισραήλ από την Αίγυπτο και κατόπιν να δώσει μια ανάγνωση της Εξόδου, των Αριθμών και του Δευτερονομίου σχεδιασμένη έτσι ώστε να εξηγεί τη σημασία τους για τόσες γενιές θρησκευτικών και πολιτικών ριζοσπαστών. Η απόδραση από την αιχμαλωσία, η περιπλάνηση στην έρημο, η ανάβαση στο όρος Σινά, η γη της επαγγελίας: όλα αυτά δεσπόζουν στη γραμματεία της επανάστασης. Πράγματι, η επανάσταση έχει συχνά αποδοθεί ως αναπαράσταση της Εξόδου και η Έξοδος έχει ιδωθεί πολλές φορές ως πρόγραμμα επανάστασης. 

Στόχος του βιβλίου δεν είναι να παραθέσει μια ιστορία της ιδέας της απολύτρωσης αλλά μια μελέτη της σημασίας της, και δεν υπάρχει καλύτερος τρόπος να το πετύχει αυτό από το να μιμηθεί τους πολλούς συνηγόρους και ακτιβιστές της απολύτρωσης που μάζεψαν τους οπαδούς τους γύρω τους και τους διάβασαν τη βιβλική ιστορία· που διάβασαν και ανέπτυξαν και ερμήνευσαν την ιστορία· επειδή κάθε ανάγνωση είναι ταυτόχρονα και μια εκδοχή, μια επανεφεύρεση του παρελθόντος προς χάριν του παρόντος. Γιατί όμως επανεφευρίσκεται αενάως αυτή η ιστορία; Ακριβώς αυτό προσπαθεί να εξηγήσει το Έξοδος και επανάσταση. 

Ο Michael Walzer γεννήθηκε το 1935 στη Νέα Υόρκη. Σπούδασε στο Πανεπιστήμιο Μπράνταϊς (Μασσαχουσέτη) και έκανε μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Καίμπριτζ. Δίδαξε στα Πανεπιστήμια του Πρίνστον (1962-1966) και του Χάρβαρντ καθηγητής. Το 2006 ανακηρύχθηκε επίτιμος διδάκτορας του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών. Διετέλεσε επί τέσσερεις δεκαετίες, μέχρι την άνοιξη του 2013, συνδιευθυντής αριστερά της Αμερικής. Ο Μάικλ Γουόλζερ είναι από τους κυριότερους εκπροσώπους της αμερικανικής πολιτικής φιλοσοφίας. Στα ελληνικά κυκλοφορούν τα βιβλία του: Περί ανεκτικότητας (Καστανιώτης 1998), Η ηθική εντός και εκτός των συνόρων (Πόλις 2003), Δίκαιοι και άδικοι πόλεμοι (Ιωλκός 2008).

Ο εκδοτικός οίκος Brill θα κυκλοφορήσει σύντομα ένα νέο ακαδημαϊκό περιοδικό αφιερωμένο αποκλειστικά στο θέμα του γνωστικισμού. Το περιοδικό έρχεται να καλύψει ένα κενό στο χώρο των ακαδημαϊκών περιοδικών, καθώς μελέτες για τον γνωστικισμό συνήθως φιλοξενούνται σε περιοδικά γενικότερα θεολογικά ή σε ειδικά πατρολογικού και πατρολογικού περιεχομένου:

Gnosis: Journal of Gnostic Studies

Gnosis: Journal of Gnostic Studies is a peer-reviewed publication devoted to the study of Gnostic religious currents from the ancient world to the modern, where 'Gnostic' is broadly conceived as a reference to special direct knowledge of the divine, which either transcends or transgresses conventional religious knowledge. It aims to publish academic papers on: the emergence of the Gnostic, in its many different historical and local cultural contexts; the Gnostic strands that persisted in the middle ages; and modern interpretations of Gnosticism - with the goal of establishing cross-cultural and trans-historical conversations, together with more localized historical analyses. 

The corpus of Gnostic materials includes (but is not restricted to) testimonies from outsiders as well as insider literature such as the Nag Hammadi collection, the Hermetica, the Pistis Sophia, the books of Jeu, the Berlin and Tchacos codices, Manichaean documents, Mandaean scriptures, and contemporary Gnostic fiction/film and 'revealed' literature. The journal will publish the best of traditional historical and comparative scholarship while also featuring newer approaches that have received less attention in the established literature, such as cognitive science, cognitive linguistics, social memory, psychology, ethnography, sociology, and literary theory.

Ad Fontes, Ad Futura: Erasmus’ Bible and the Impact of Scripture

In celebration of upcoming 500th anniversary of Erasmus’ Greek text and the Reformation, the Department of Theologyat HBU, in conjunction with the Dunham Bible Museum, is pleased to host the conference Ad Fontes, Ad Futura: Erasmus’ Bible and the Impact of Scripture. The conference will consider the textual and historical issues surrounding the development of the Bible, the Bible’s impact on human society across the centuries, and the future of Biblical translation and interpretation in the future. Our keynote speakers include Craig Evans (Houston Baptist University), Timothy George (Beeson Divinity School, Samford University), Herman Selderhuis (Theological University Apeldoorn) and Daniel Wallace (Dallas Theological Seminary). The plenary talks are free and open to the public.

We also invite proposals for short papers from scholars and graduate students from a wide array of disciplines and topics, including:

The historical context, and textual tradition, of the Biblical canon;

The history of the Greek text of the Bible;

The social and/or cultural impact of the Bible in any historical period or location;

The Bible and the history of the book;

Modern Bible translations and translation practice;

Textual and cultural issues concerning the Bible in the Digital Age.

Anyone who is interested should submit a 300 word abstract on any relevant topic. Papers should be 20 minutes long, and decisions will be announced before January 8, 2016. Send proposals to Jason Maston at jmaston@hbu.edu.
