Ο Larry Hurtado συζητά στο ιστολόγιό του με αφορμή τη βιβλιοκρισία του νέου τόμου The Text of the New Testament in contemporary Research: Essays on the Status Quaestionis, Second Edition, επιμ. Bart D. Ehrman & Michael W. Holmes (Leiden/Boston: Brill, 2013) το κείμενο του M.W. Holmes, "From 'Original text' to 'Initial Text': The Traditional Goal of New Testament Textual Criticism in Contemporary Discussion" (σσ. 637-88). Σχολιάζει τις δύο βασικές τάσεις που παρατηρούνται στην κριτική του κειμένου: στην αποκατάσταση ενός κειμένου που θα πλησιάζει στο αυτόγραφο και στην αναζήτηση του ζωντανού κειμένου, όπου οι διαφοροποιήσεις στη χειρόγραφη παράδοση δεν θεωρούνται πρόβλημα αλλά μάλλον ενδιαφέρουσες μαρτυρίες για τους τρόπους με τους οποίους παραδόθηκε και διατηρήθηκε μέσα στις διάφορες αρχαίες εκκλησιαστικές κοινότητες το κείμενο της Καινής Διαθήκης.

Ένα νέο βιβλικό ιστολόγιο / A new biblioblog

Οι καθηγητές James Crossley (Sheffield) και Deane Galbraith (Otago) σχεδίασαν και διαχειρίζονται ένα εξαιρετικό ιστολόγιο βιβλικών σπουδών που έκανε την επίσημή του εμφάνιση σήμερα στο διαδίκτυο. Πρόκειται για ένα πραγματικά χρηστικό εργαλείο για ερευνητές και δασκάλους, καθώς συγκεντρώνει υλικό σχετικά με τις βιβλικές σπουδές που υπάρχει αναρτημένο στο διαδίκτυο σε διάφορες μορφές.

Στο τρέχον τεύχος του περιοδικού Novum Testamentum 55:4 (2013) δημοσιεύονται τα εξής άρθρα:

James R. Harrison, "Paul’s “Indebtedness” to the Barbarian (Rom 1:14) in Latin West Perspective", 311-348 

Mεταφέροντας το γεωγραφικό κέντρο βάρους της ιεραποστολής του από την ελληνόφωνη Ανατολή στη λατινόφωνη Δύση (Ρωμ 15, 23-24. 28. πρβλ. 1, 9-10. 13), ο Παύλος δηλώνει υπόχρεος σε "Έλληνες και βαρβάρους"(1, 14). Η γλώσσα του Παύλου εδώ όχι μόνο σχετικοποιεί τις εθνικές και γλωσσικές διακρίσεις της αρχαιότητας (στ. 14α) αλλά και τα πολιτισμικά και εκπαιδευτικά στερεότυπα, συμπεριλαμβάνοντας και τους βαρβάρους (στ. 14β). Η σκέψη του αποστόλου εδώ δεν θα πρέπει να περιοριστεί μόνο στον ευαγγελισμό της λατινικής Δύσης και στην ποιμαντική μέριμνα για τις εκκλησίες του, αν κι αυτό φαίνεται να είναι το κέντρο βάρους της περικοπής (στ. 8β-9α. 11-12α. 13β. 15-17). Η γλώσσα του χρέους απαντά σε διάφορες συνάφειες, κάποιες από τις οποίες είναι κοινωνικές (1, 14α. 4, 4. 13, 8. 15, 1. 27). Παραπέμπει στην πολιτική και κοινωνική γλώσσα του ρωμαϊκού κόσμου, με έμμεσες αναφορές στην αυτοκρατορική πατρωνεία και ανταπόδοση στις δυτικές επαρχίες όπου κατοικούσαν τα βάρβαρα φύλα. Ο συγγραφέας αρχικά εξετάζει αναφορές σε βαρβάρους σε ορισμένους Ρωμαίους συγγραφείς και στην αυτοκρατορική θριαμβική εικονογραφία και στη συνέχεια την έννοια της "δέσμευσης" στις επιγραφές της Ισπανίας. Ο συγγραφέας υποστηρίζει ότι Ρωμ 1, 14 ορίζει το τι σημαίνει το "χρέος" για την ιεραποστολή των περιθωριοποιημένων ομάδων έξω από το σώμα του Χριστού. Αυτό καθιστούσε δυνατό οι παύλειες κατ' οίκον εκκλησίες να δεχθούν ανθρώπους από τα βαρβαρικά φύλα με τους οποίους οι Ρωμαίοι είχαν σχέσεις πατρωνείας, αλλά και από τις φυλές της λατινικής Δύσης, τις οποίες οι Ρωμαίοι είχαν τιμωρήσει εξαιτίας της αντίστασης που πρόβαλαν. 

Christopher T. Holmes, "Utterly Incapacitated. The Neglected Meaning of ΠΑΡΕΣΙΣ in Romans 3:25", 349-366

O συγγραφέας συζητά την κατάλληλη μετάφραση της λ. "πάρεσις" στο Ρωμ 3, 25, το οποίο είναι η μόνη περίπτωση που η λέξη απαντά στην Βίβλο. Υποστηρίζει ότι η "παράλυση" θα πρέπει να θεωρηθεί ως η κατάλληλη μετάφραση με βάση κυρίως τη χρήση του όρου σε άλλους συγγραφείς της ελληνιστικής περιόδου και ειδικότερα στον ιατρικό συγγραφέα Αρεταίο της Καππαδοκίας. Μολονότι κάποιοι κάνουν λόγο για την "παράλυση" ως μία δυνατή εξήγηση της λέξης "πάρεσις" κανείς δεν έχει μέχρι σήμερα λάβει σοβαρά υπόψη την πιθανότητα αυτή η ερμηνεία να είναι ο καλύτερος τρόπος για να κατανοηθεί η λέξη, καθώς συμφωνεί και με το γενικότερο επιχείρημα του Παύλου.

Mπορούμε να δεχθούμε τη μετάφραση του Α΄ Κορ 2, 14β  που προτείνει η L.B. Dingeldein: (ο "ψυχικός" άνθρωπος) δε μπορεί να γνωρίζει "ότι εξετάζεται πνευματικά"; Μία ανάλυση της συνάφειας του στίχους υποδηλώνει ότι θα πρέπει εδώ να προτιμηθεί η αιτιολογική χρήση του ότι: (ο "ψυχικός" άνθρωπος) δεν μπορεί να τα γνωρίζει αυτά (τα πράγματα του πνεύματος του Θεού), "γιατί αυτά διακρίνονται πνευματικά".

H συγγραφέας συζητά τη σημασία του ρήματος "ἐπιβαρεῖν".

John A.L. Lee, "Etymological Follies. Three Recent Lexicons of the New Testament", 383-403
O συγγραφέας εξετάζει και συζητά κριτικά τρία πρόσφατα λεξικά της Καινής Διαθήκης κι επισημαίνει σοβαρά προβλήματα σε αυτά, τα οποία κυρίως οφείλονται στην εξάρτησή τους από προηγούμενα παρωχημένα έργα. 

Αναζητώντας τους θησαυρούς του Σολομώντα / Searching for King Solomon's treasures

Η μετάφραση κι έκδοση ενός ιουδαϊκού ψευδεπίγραφου με τον τίτλο Πραγματεία για τα Σκεύη (Massekhet Kelim) από τον Jim Davila (στο συλλογικό τόμο Old Testament Pseudepigrapha: More Noncanonical Scriptures, τόμος 1) έχει προκαλέσει αρκετές συζητήσεις στο διαδίκτυο και κάποια δημοσιεύματα στον τύπο. Κι αυτό οφείλεται στο ότι το συγκεκριμένο κείμενο περιέχει έναν εκτενή κατάλογο των θησαυρών του Σολομώντα και των τόπων όπου τους έκρυψαν "οι Λευίτες κι οι προφήτες" (στην Βαβυλώνα, στην Παλαιστίνη και κάποιοι παραδόθηκαν "στα χέρια των αγγέλων Σαμσιήλ, Μιχαήλ, Γαβριήλ κι ίσως Σαριήλ"). Το κείμενο παρουσιάζει μεγάλες ομοιότητες με τον Χάλκινο Κύλινδρο του Κουμράν. Σύμφωνα με τον Davila πρόκειται για ένα κείμενο με στοιχεία μύθου που περισσότερο γράφηκε ως ψυχαγωγικό ανάγνωσμα παρά ως χάρτης των χαμένων θησαυρών. Παραπέμπουμε σε δύο δημοσιεύσεις στο διαδίκτυο που στηρίζονται σε συνέντευξη του Jim Davila στην ηλεκτρονική έκδοση της LiveScience και της Daily Mail.

CFP: EABS 6th Graduate Symposium

European Association of Biblical Studies
Sixth Graduate Symposium: April 11-13, 2014 in Thessaloniki, Greece

EABS is excited to announce its sixth graduate symposium, which will take place in Thessaloniki on the weekend of April 11-13, 2014.  The symposium, which seeks to engender a  supportive atmosphere for dialogue across a variety of biblical and related studies (OT, NT, DSS, early Christianity, rabbinics, etc.), invites PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers to present on a topic related to their research area.  Participants may format their presentation as they see fit: paper, seminar discussion, workshop session, or another form.

This year we especially encourage you to propose posters! You do not need to send a complete poster as a proposal, although this would be appreciated.

The EABS Graduate Symposium is happy to welcome a few senior scholars, including the EABS president, Professor Reimund Bieringer (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven), who will offer feedback and share their own

experiences in the field.  In addition, we look forward to continuing the tradition of holding a joint session with graduate students from the University of Alberta.

Candidates should submit their abstracts and/or posters of no more than 300 words to students@eabs.net no later than January 15th, 2014. Please mention the preferred format in the abstract (i.e. paper, workshop, pre-circulated paper, discussion etc.). Papers should fit time slots of 20 minutes.

Participants have to be members of the EABS. The one-year membership (from Januay 1st to December 31st ) for 2014 is €10.  You can join EABS here.

+ Birger Gerhardsson (1926-2013)

Στις 25 Δεκεμβρίου 2013 έφυγε από τη ζωή ο γνωστός Σουηδός καθηγητής της Καινής Διαθήκης Birger Gerhardsson. Γεννήθηκε στα 1926 στην πόλη της Vännäs. Σπούδασε θεολογία στην Uppsala κι αναγορεύθηκε διδάκτορας στο ίδιο πανεπιστήμιο στα 1961. Η διατριβή του, με τον τίτλο Memory and Manuscript; Oral Tradition and Written Transmission in Rabbinic Judaism and Early Christianity, αποτέλεσε βιβλίο σταθμό στη μελέτη της προφορικής παράδοσης του αρχέγονου Χριστιανισμού. Από τα 1965 κι έως τα 1992, όταν συνταξιοδοτήθηκε ο Gerhardsson δίδαξε ως καθηγητής της ΚΔ στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Lund. Διετέλεσε πρόεδρος της SNTS στα 1990.

Bασική θέση του Gerhardsson υπήρξε ότι οι πρώτοι Χριστιανοί υιοθέτησαν τους ίδιους μηχανισμούς διατήρησης και διάδοσης της προφορικής παράδοσής τους για τον Ιησού, όπως και οι σύγχρονοί τους ραββίνοι για τις δικές τους παραδόσεις. Η θέση του δέχθηκε κριτική, κυρίως διότι θεωρήθηκε ότι μεταφέρει στην εποχή πριν το 70 μ.Χ. παραδόσεις που είναι μεταγενέστερες (κυρίως μετά το 135 μ.Χ.). Το έργο του όμως αποτέλεσε τη βάση για ερευνητές, όπως Martin Hengel, Richard Bauckham και Samuel Byrskog. 

Αναμφισβήτητα, ο Gerhardsson υπήρξε ένας από τους σπουδαιότερους εξηγητές της γενιάς του και η συμβολή του στην κατανόηση της διατήρησης της προφορικής παράδοσης του αρχέγονου Χριστιανισμού παραμένει μεγάλη ακόμη και σήμερα.

H "στροφή" στις υλικές μαρτυρίες του αρχέγονου Χριστιανισμού / The "material turn" in study of Early Christianity

Ο Larry Hurtado στην ενδιαφέρουσα προχθεσινή του ανάρτηση σχολιάζει την παρατήρηση της Kim Haines-Eitzen ("The Social History of Early Christian Scribes", στη δεύτερη, αναθεωρημένη έκδοση του τόμου The Text of the New Testament in Contemporary Research: Essays on the Status Quaestionis, [ed. B. D. Ehrman & M.W. Holmes]) ότι παρατηρείται μία "στροφή" στη μελέτη των παπύρων και τα χειρογράφων του αρχέγονου Χριστιανισμού ("a ‘material turn’ in the study of early Christianity"). Ο Hurtado κάνει μία σύντομη αναδρομή στις σημαντικότερες παλαιότερες μελέτες (μεταξύ των οποίων και κάποιων δικών του) και καταλήγει:

"It’s encouraging to see younger scholars showing interest in these matters and exploring further lines of research. Perhaps there is a “material turn” evident in the field. But it is also a bit puzzling that so many NT scholars (and aspiring scholars) seem so unaware of the importance of early Christian manuscripts as our earliest extant physical expressions of early Christianity." 

Mία ενδιαφέρουσα παρατήρηση κι ένα ζητούμενο στην καινοδιαθηκική έρευνα. Είναι, πραγματικά, απαραίτητο να δημιουργηθεί μια νέα γενιά ερευνητών του υλικού πολιτισμού (και κυρίως της χειρόγραφης παράδοσης των βιβλικών και λειτουργικών βιβλίων) του αρχέγονου Χριστιανισμού και της αρχαίας Εκκλησίας.

Στην ποιότητα του κρασιού φαίνεται να αναφερόταν η επιγραφή που βρέθηκε χαραγμένη στη λαβή ενός αγγείου που βρέθηκε στην περιοχή Ophel της Ιερουσαλήμ. Σύμφωνα με τους ειδικούς είναι η αρχαιότερη εβραϊκή επιγραφή που βρέθηκε στην πόλη κι ανάγεται στην εποχή του βασιλιά Σολομώντα. 

Σύμφωνα με μια νέα ανάγνωση που προτείνει ο καθηγητής Geshon Galil (Παν/μιο της Haifa), το πρώτο γράμμα της διασωζόμενης επιγραφής ήταν το τελευταίο μίας μεγάλης λέξης που αναφερόταν στην ημερομηνία, το μεσαίο τμήμα αναφερόταν στον τύπο κρασιού που περιείχε το αγγείο και το τελευταίο γράμμα ήταν το αρχικό της λέξης που δήλωνε τον τόπο προέλευσης. Κατά την άποψη του Galil πρόκειται για χαμηλής ποιότητας κρασί που προσφερόταν στους εργάτες που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν στο πρόγραμμα ανοικοδόμησης του βασιλιά Σολομώντα και στους στρατιώτες του βασιλιά. Ο καθηγητής χρονολογεί την επιγραφή στα μ. του 10ου αι. π.Χ., όταν είχε ολοκληρωθεί μέρος των οικοδομικών έργων του γνωστού βασιλιά. Η επιγραφή παρουσιάζει επίσης ενδιαφέρον, διότι αντικατοπτρίζει ένα οργανωμένο διοικητικό σύστημα (αποθήκευση και καταγραφή των αγαθών με βάση τον τύπο, την ημερομηνία και τον τόπο προέλευσης).

Στην ιστοσελίδα The Bible and Interpretation έχει αναρτηθεί ένα σύντομο άρθρο του Bruce Chilton. Με αφορμή τα βιβλία για τον Ιησού του Geza Vermes και του Reza Aslan σχολιάζει τη στροφή στις σπουδές για τον ιστορικό Ιησού που αυτά σηματοδοτούν και κυρίως τον τονισμός της ιουδαϊκής ταυτότητας του Ιησού. Ασκεί, ωστόσο, κριτική στο ότι κι οι δύο αποφεύγουν να τονίσουν την κεντρική θέση της έννοιας της Βασιλείας του Θεού στο κήρυγμά του και καταλήγει:

"As I pointed out in an earlier essay in Bible & Interpretation (In My View: from “The Historical Jesus” to understanding Jesus, historically), how we prefer to think about Jesus should not determine the results of historical research concerning what he said and did. You might like him to be an ideological figure of some sort, a champion of the Trinity or a poster child for charisma or a political activist, but his signature concern for the kingdom of God shows that his motives were in fact religious. He anticipated that his followers would put into action the same care for one another and for enemies that God displayed, as part of the global transformation that he believed was unfolding. You might like or dislike his vision, but it is not quite honest to cover it up with truncated history."
