Στο τρέχον τεύχος του περιοδικού Journal for the Study of the New Testament 35:4 (2013) δημοσιεύονται τα εξής άρθρα: 

M. Goodacre, "How Reliable is the Story of the Nag Hammadi Discovery?", 303-322

H αφήγηση του James Robinson για το πώς ανακαλύφθηκαν οι Κώδικες του Nag Hammadi είναι εξαιρετικά διαδεδομένη. Πρόκειται για ένα εξαιρετικό παράδειγμα δημοσιογραφικής έρευνας που περιλαμβάνει ίντριγκα και αίμα. Υπάρχουν όμως κι άλλες πολλές και αντικρουόμενες μεταξύ τους εκδοχές της ιστορίας, που περιλαμβάνουν δύο (1977), επτά (1979) ή οκτώ πρόσωπα (1981). Υπάρχει ασυμφωνία όσον αφορά στο όνομα του προσώπου που βρήκε το δοχείο με τα χειρόγραφα. Οι Martin Krause και Rodolphe Kasser αμφισβήτησαν αυτές τις ιστορίες στα 1984 και ο σκεπτικισμός τους αντικατοπτρίζεται στη σειρά του  Channel 4 (UK), The Gnostics (1987), όπου ο ίδιος ο  Μuhammad ‘Ali, στη μοναδική του τηλεοπτική εμφάνιση, δίνει τη δική του εκδοχή για την ανακάλυψη. Πολλά σημεία διαφωνίας αυτής της αφήγησης από τις προηγούμενες δίνουν την αφορμή να αμφισβητηθεί η αξιοπιστία της μαρτυρίας του Αλί. Ο συγγραφέας καταλήγει ότι η παλαιότερη εκδοχή της ανακάλυψης, που πρότεινε ο Jean Doresse στα  1958 είναι περισσότερο αξιόπιστη από τις μεταγενέστερες και περισσότερο εντυπωσιακές εκδοχές της ανακάλυψης.  

Anna C. Miller, "Not with Eloquent Wisdom: Democratic Ekklesia Discourse in 1 Corinthians 1-4", 323-354

Στις περισσότερες περιπτώσεις οι ειδικοί αδιαφορούν για την πιθανή επίδραση της δημοκρατικής έννοιας της πόσης στη συζήτηση του Παύλου για το λόγο και τη σοφία στα Α΄ Κορ 1-4. Βστόσο η ιδέα της εκκλησίας του δήμου αποτέλεσε πηγή δημοκρατικού λόγου, διαμόρφωσης ταυτότητας και πρακτικής συμπεριφοράς στην πρώιμη ρωμαϊκή αυτοκρατορία. Επιπλέον ο λόγος αποδείχθηκε ένα συνηθισμένο θέμα της δημοκρατικής ρητορείας και συνδέθηκε άμεσα με τη συμμετοχή των πολιτών στα κοινά στη συνάφεια της εκκλησίας του δήμου. Η ανάγνωση των Α΄ Κορ 1-4 υπό το φως της συζήτησης για την εκκλησία οδηγεί σε νέα συμπεράσματα όσον αφορά τη ρητορική στρατηγική του Παύλου, ο οποίος προσπαθεί να εδραιώσει την αυθεντία του σε μία κοινότητα που κατανοούσε τον εαυτό της ως μία ισχυρή δημοκρατική σύναξη. 

Jonathan Knight, "The Political Issue of the Ascension of Isaiah: A Response to Enrico Norelli", 355-379

O Enrico Norelli υποστήριξη στα 2003 ότι οι αναφορές στο μαρτύριο στην Ανάληψη Ησαΐου είναι συμβολικές και όχι πραγματικές. Ο συγγραφέας του άρθρου αμφισβητεί την αξιοπιστία της μαρτυρίας της Μισνά στην οποία στηρίζεται ο Norelli για να υποστηρίξει ότι η εικόνα του Ησαΐα ως μάρτυρα προέρχεται από χριστιανικούς κύκλους του 2ου αι.  Υποστηρίζει ότι η ανάπτυξη των ιδεών στα κεφ. 1-5 οδηγεί στο συμπέρασμα ότι το μαρτύριο είναι μία πρόσφατη εμπειρία για το συγγραφέα του βιβλίου κι όχι απλά μία συμβολική ιδέα. Ετσι, θεωρεί ως πιθανή συνάφεια της ιστορίας το μαρτύριο του Ιγνατίου.Θεωρεί επίσης ότι η Ανάληψις Ησαΐου έχει μία σαφή πολιτική διάσταση και στα δύο μέρη του. Ο συγγραφέας συνδέει επίσης αυτές τις πληροφορίες με την αντίδαση της χριστιανικής Εκκλησίας απέναντι στους Ιουδαίους και τους Ρωμαίους.

Ο συγγραφέας απαντά στην κριτική που του άσκησε με άρθρο του σε προηγούμενο τεύχος του περιοδικού ο John C. Poirier, ‘The Roll, the Codex, the Wax Tablet and the Synoptic Problem’, JSNT 35.1: 3-30.

Ο συγγραφέας παρουσιάζει τους δύο πρώτους τόμους μία νέας σειράς επιγραφών με τον τίτλο Corpus Inscriptionum Iudaeae/Palaestinae και διερευνά τη σημασία που μπορεί να έχουν κάποιες από αυτές τις επιγραφές για την Καινή Διαθήκη.

Στο τρέχον τεύχος του περιοδικού New Testament Studies 59:2 (2013) δημοσιεύονται τα εξής άρθρα:

Henk Jan de Jonge, "The Chronology of the Ascension Stories in Luke and Acts", 151-171

Τόσο στο ευαγγέλιό του όσο και στις Πράξεις ο Λουκάς τοποθετεί την ανάληψη στο τέλος της μέρας της ανάστασης του Ιησού. Δεν υπάρχει καμιά διαφορά όσον αφορά στη χρονολόγηση της ανάληψης μεταξύ των δύο βιβλίων. Οι σαράντα μέρες που αναφέρονται στο Πραξ 1, 3 ουσιαστικά αντιμετωπίζονται από τον Λουκά ως οι μέρες μετά την ανάληψη κι όχι πριν από αυτήν κι επομένως δεν ορίζουν τη χρονική στιγμή που έλαβε χώρα η ανάληψη. Συνδέονται με τις εμφανίσεις του Ιησού μετά το Πάσχα και μετά την ανάληψη. Ο συγγραφέας επομένως συμπεραίνει ότι το γεγονός της ανάληψης προηγείται των 40 ημερών που ο Ιησούς εμφανίζεται στους μαθητές του. 

Robert E. Moses, "Physical and/or Spiritual Exclusion? Ecclesial Discipline in 1 Corinthians 5 ", 172-191

Ο συγγραφέας θέτει το ερώτημα τι μπορεί να σημαίνει όταν ο Παύλος ζητά να παραδοθεί ο αιμομίκτης της Κορίνθου στον σατανά. Την φυσική εκδίωξή του από την κοινότητα ή κάτι άλλο; Υποστηρίζει ότι η φύση του παραπτώματος αυτού του άνδρα απαιτούσε μία αυστηρότερη τιμωρία από μία απλή εκδίωξη. Στηριζόμενος στο βιβλίο του Ιώβ διατυπώνει την υπόθεση ότι σε αυτήν την περίπτωση πρόκειται για μία πνευματική τιμωρία, όπου αφαιρείται η πνευματική προστασία από τον αιμομίκτη, ενώ αυτός παραμένει στο σώμα του Χριστού και ταυτόχρονα είναι εκτεθειμένος στις επιθέσεις του Σατανά. Η ελπίδα του Παύλου είναι τα παθήματα αυτού του ανθρώπου από τον Σατανά θα τον οδηγήσουν στη μετάνοια και στη σωτηρία. 

Christine Gerber, "Die alte Braut und Christi Leib. Zum ekklesiologischen Entwurf des Epheserbriefs", 192-221

H γενικά αποδεκτή άποψη στην εξήγηση της προς Εφεσίους επιστολής είναι ότι το κύριο θέμα της είναι η "εκκλησία". Προχωρώντας πέρα από τις πρωτοπαύλειες επιστολές η προς Εφεσίους κατανοεί την εκκλησία όχι σε τοπικό επίπεδο αλλά στην οικουμενική της διάσταση. Παραμένει ωστόσο ανοικτό θέμα προς συζήτηση, εάν η εκκλησιολογία είναι το κέντρο της επιστολής, μέσα στην οποία εμπερικλείεται κι η χριστολογία κι εάν η Εκκλησία εδώ αποκτά σωτηριολογικές ιδιότητες. Η συγγραφέας επανεξετάζει τον όρο "εκκλησία" καθώς και τις μεταφορές που χρησιμοποιούνται για αυτήν μέσα στην επιστολή. Από αυτήν την εξέταση προκύπτει ότι στην Εφεσίους η εκκλησιολογία διαδραματίζει κάποιο ρόλο, αλλά δεν υπάρχει ακόμη η ιδέα της Εκκλησίας ως μίας υπερβατικής έννοιας. Οι μεταφορές επίσης που χρησιμοποιούνται δε φαίνεται να προϋποθέτουν μία αναπτυγμένη ιδέα για την Εκκλησία ως το "χώρο της σωτηρίας". Αντίθετα η σωτηριολογία κι η χριστολογία παραμένουν ακόμη στενά συνδεδεμένες με την Χριστολογία. Επομένως, η προς Εφεσίους αναπτύσσει την ιδέα της ενότητας και της κοινωνίας των πιστών όχι σε σχέση με την εκκλησιολογία αλλά ως περιεχόμενο της παραίνεσης της επιστολής που σκοπό έχει να συνδέσει μεταξύ τους χριστιανούς με διαφορετικές προϋποθέσεις και πεποιθήσεις. 

Jonathan Bourgel, "Jacques le Juste, un Oblias parmi d'autres", 222-246 
Στην Εκκλησιαστική Ιστορία του ο Ευσέβιος παραθέτει ένα απόσπασμα από τα χαμένα απομνημονεύματα του Ηγησίππου, όπου γίνεται λόγος για το μαρτύριο του Ιακώβου του Δικαίου. Σύμφωνα με αυτό ο Ιάκωβος ονομάζεται ᾽Ωβλίας.  Στο παρόν άρθρο ο συγγραφέας εξετάζει αυτόν το δυσνόητο όρο και να τον συνδέσει με τον χώρο που γεννήθηκε η παράδοση που παραθέτει εδώ ο Ηγίσιππος. Καταλήγει ότι ο όρος ήταν εξαιρετικά αγαπητός στην ιουδαϊκή γραμματεία μετά την καταστροφή του δεύτερου Ναού. 

Ismo Dunderberg, "Moral Progress in Early Christian Stories of the Soul", 247-267

Η μελέτη εξετάζει τον τρόπο με τον οποίο περιγράφεται σε διάφορα κείμενα του Nag Hammadi η παρούσα κατάσταση της ψυχής κι η επιστροφή της στην ουράνια σφαίρα. Η κατάσταση της ψυχής καταλαμβάνει κεντρική θέση σε δύο τύπους ιστοριών: (α) στους μύθους της δημιουργίας, όπου η προέλευση της ψυχής συνδέεται με έναν κατώτερο δημιουργό θεό και (β) σε απλές ιστορίες για την ψυχή χωρίς καμιά αναφορά στη δημιουργία. Τα κύρια έργα αυτού του δεύτερου τύπου είναι η Εξήγησις περί Ψυχής (NHC II, 6) κι ο Αυθεντικός Λόγος (NHC VI, 3). Επιπλέον τρεις μύθοι περί της δημιουργίας θα πρέπει να ληφθούν εδώ υπόψη: το μυστικό βιβλίο του Ιωάννη, η Φύση των Αρχόντων και το Περί αρχών του κόσμου. Η ταλαιπωρία της ψυχής εξαιτίας των συναισθημάτων της συνδέεται με μία μακρά φιλοσοφική παράδοση που έχει τις απαρχές της στους διαλόγους του Πλάτωνα. Σε αυτήν τη συνάφεια η πάλη της ψυχής ενάντια στους δαίμονες παρουσιάζεται κυρίως ως μάχη ενάντια στα συναισθήματα. Ένα νέο στοιχείο σε αυτές τις ιστορίες είναι η έμφαση στη μετάνοια που οδηγεί στη μεταμόρφωση της ψυχής. Μολονότι εδώ χρησιμοποιούνται ερωτικές εικόνες για να περιγραφεί τόσο το μυθικό παρελθόν όσο και η παρούσα κατάσταση της ψυχής, ωστόσο, από την ανάλυση προκύπτει ότι το ερωτικό πάθος δεν είναι το μόνο ηθικό ζήτημα που απασχολεί αυτά τα κείμενα. Κάποια κείμενα εστιάζουν περισσότερο την προσοχή τους στην οινοποσία, στην πολυτέλεια, στην όμορφη εμφάνιση, στην περηφάνια και στην αλαζονεία παρά στον παράνομο έρωτα.

Το έργο του Μαρτιάλη Liber spectaculorum περιγράφει τα θεάματα στο φλαβιανό αμφιθέατρο, το οποίο κατά πάσα πιθανότητα κατασκευάστηκε με χρήματα που αποκτήθηκαν κατά τον Ιουδαϊκό Πόλεμο. Η συγγραφέας του παρόντος άρθρου τοποθετεί τα επιγράμματα του έργου του Μαρτιάλη μέσα στην ιστορική τους συνάφεια και τα συνδέει με πληροφορίες του Ιωσήπου κι άλλων πηγών. Εντοπίζει κάποιες αναφορές στους κατοίκους της Ιουδαίας σε ορισμένα επιγράμματα που κάνουν λόγο για ανθρωπόμορφα ζώα. Λαμβάνει επίσης υπόψη το επίγραμμα από το Florilegium Gallicum, το οποίο εκδίδεται στο τέλος του Liber από τον 16ο αι. κι εξής. Στο Liber spectaculorum, ο Μαρτιάλης ουσιαστικά υιοθετεί διάφορες στρατηγικές για να φιμώσει τους κατοίκους της Ιουδαίας - ‘de Solymis … perustis’, όπως λέει ο ποιητής στο Ep. 7.55— των οποίων η λεηλατημένη περιουσία χρησιμοποιήθηκε για να κτισθεί το Κολοσσαίο. Αυτό μπορεί, εν μέρει, να είναι το αποτέλεσμα του συνδυασμού επιγραμμάτων από τις βασιλείες τόσο του Τίτου όσο και του Δομιτιανού σε ένα αναθεωρημένο Liber, το οποίο παρουσιάζει έναν μόνο "καίσαρα" που αντιπροσωπεύει και τους δύο αυτοκράτορες. Καθώς ο Δομιτιανός δεν πήρε μέρος στον Ιουδαϊκό Πόλεμο, ο Μαρτιάλης αποφεύγει -ή τα αφαίρεσε κατά την αναθεώρηση - τα σαφή σχόλια σχετικά με την νίκη στον Ιουδαϊκό Πόλεμο. Από τον αναγνώστη εξαρτάται επομένως να ανακαλύψει τους Ιουδαίους πίσω από τα ζώα των επιγραμμάτων που θα τιμωρηθούν στην αρένα του κειμένου του και τέλος, ως ηττημένοι θα πληρώσουν το τίμημα της επανάστασής τους.

Στο άρθρο υποστηρίζεται πως η εικόνα της τεκνοποιΐας λειτουργεί ως αφηγηματικό μοτίβο στο 4 Έσδρα. Η γλώσσα της γονιμότητας και της γέννας εμφανίζεται τακτικά σε σχέση προς το θέμα της θεοδικίας στον Έσδρα και προς την αναζήτηση της γνώσης. Ο άγγελος χρησιμοποιεί μεταφορές σχετικά με την γέννα για να δώσει οδηγίες στον Έσδρα σχετικά με την επερχόμενη μετάβαση των αιώνων: τα σημεία του τέλους της παλαιάς εποχής είναι η δύσκολη γέννα κι οι ωδίνες, ενώ η γόνιμη νέα εποχή θα γεννήσει σύμφωνα με τον προκαθορισμένο προγραμματισμό. Αυτές οι αναρίθμητες αναφορές λειτουργούν ως όχημα για το θέμα της κίνησης του Έσδρα προς την κατανόηση, η οποία επιτυγχάνεται όταν μία γυναίκα που τίκτει εμφανίζεται μπροστά του. Ο συγγραφέας υποστηρίζει ότι το αρχικό όνομα του όρους στην Εδέμ, στο οποίο ο Ενώχ έκανε την προσφορά του ήταν το όρος του θυμιάματος (Ιωβ. 4.25) κι ότι αυτό και το πρώτο όρος στο 4.26 (το όρος της Εδέμ / Παραδείσου) είναι το ίδιο όρος. Το δεύτερο όρος στο 4.26, το όρος της Ανατολής, είναι το Όρος Lubar, στο οποίο προσάραξε η Κιβωτός κατά το τέλος του Κατακλυσμού και όπου έζησε ο Νώε μέχρι το θάνατό του. Και τα τέσσερα όρη στο 4.26 είναι τόποι, όπου ο Θεός αποκαλύφθηκε ή θα αποκαλυφθεί στους εκλεκτούς του και για αυτό είναι ιερά για τον Κύριο.

Programme
The research group will focus a) on various aspects of the social life of the Graeco-Roman world (e.g. household networks and religion, kinship, friendship and other relationships, slavery, prostitution, social and geographical mobility, social groups, everyday life in Graeco-Roman cities etc.) that consist part of the socio-historical context of the New Testament texts and could therefore provide insight into them, and b) on artifacts from the Graeco-Roman world (e.g. inscriptions, papyri and archeological findings) that can shed light to various aspects of the New Testament texts and events.

Papers that present interdisciplinary approaches to the topics under discussion and offer new insights and interpretations of New Testament texts placing them within their socio-historical context are welcome.

Previous meetings

• 2010: Tartu, Estonia – “Family and Friendship as Reality and Metaphor in the Graeco-Roman World and in the New Testament” (joint session with the SBL Greco-Roman World Section)
• 2011: Thessaloniki, Greece – “Graeco-Roman Thessaloniki” (joint session with the Pauline Literature Research Group)
• 2012: Amsterdam, Netherlands – “Inscriptions and the New Testament” (joint session with the Greco-Roman World Group of SBL)

Agenda for 2013

Two sessions are scheduled for the meeting of 2013 in Leipzig:

1. a session where papers on any topic within the range of the interests of the research group as described above are welcome;
2. following the significant attendance of the session dedicated to the inscriptions and the NT in Amsterdam a session focused again on “Inscriptions and the New Testament” is being scheduled. Inscriptions have always provided useful evidence not only for understanding the New Testament vocabulary but also for illuminating events and situations described or implied in the New Testament texts. The ever growing epigraphic data provides the biblical scholarly research with a valuable pool of information that can be used through interdisciplinary readings in reconstructing the socio-historical context of the NT texts and of the early Christian communities. Therefore, papers that deal a) with methodological issues regarding the constructive use of the epigraphic data in the NT exegesis, b) with the evaluation of the work done in this field by previous scholars (e.g. A. Deissmann, R. Horsley etc), c) with particular cases of utilization of the epigraphic data in the lexicographical research of the NT, and d) with the use of the inscriptions in illuminating the social, political or religious background of the NT, are welcome.

Paper proposals and abstracts can be submitted to the chair of the research group, Ekaterini Tsalampouni (etsala@past.auth.gr). Call for papers opens on December 1st, 2012 and closes on February 15th, 2013. When submitting a paper, please, note which of the two sessions you would like it to be included in.
