+ Elizabeth A. Clark (27.9.1938-7.9.2021)

 Έφυγε από τη ζωή η ομότιμη καθηγήτρια Elizabeth A. Clark. Η εκπλιπούσα είναι γνωστή για το πλούσιο έργο της σχετικά με την αρχαία Εκκλησία και την πατερική γραμματεία. Στην έρευνά της συχνά αξιοποιούσε σύγχρονα ερμηνευτικά πρίσματα και θεωρίες όπως εκείνα της φεμινιστικής θεωρίας ή των κοινωνικών δικτύων. Το έργο που άφησε ως παρακαταθήκη στις νεότερες γενιές ερευνητές είναι πλούσιο και μαρτυρά την οξύνοιά της και την επίπονη και σχολαστική της έρευνα. Ήταν διδάκτορας του Columbia University (1965) κι από το 1982 και μέχρι τη συνταξιοδότησή της δίδαξε στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Duke, όπου και ίδρυσε το Κέντρο Σπουδών της Ύστερης Αρχαιότητας. Ανακηρύχθηκε επίτιμος διδάκτορας του Πανεπιστημίου της Ουψάλα (2003) και του Yale (2013). Βραβεύτηκε επανειλημμένα, διετέλεσε πρόεδρος σημαντικών επιστημονικών εταιριών, όπως των American Academy of Religion, American Society of Church History και North American Patristics Society. Εργάστηκε με πάθος για την αναγνώριση και την ίση εκπροσώπηση των γυναικών στον πανεπιστημιακό χώρο. Από την πληθώρα των έργων της αναφέρω εδώ ενδεικτικά: The Origenist Controversy: The Cultural Construction of an Early Christian Debate (Princeton University Press, 1992), Reading Renunciation, Asceticism and Scripture in Early Christianity (Princeton University Press, 1999), History, Theory, Text: Historians and the Linguistic Turn (Harvard University Press, 2014), Founding the Fathers: Early Church History and Protestant Professors in Nineteenth-Century America (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2011) και The Fathers Refounded: Protestant Liberalism, Roman Catholic Modernism, and the Teaching of Ancient Christianity in Early Twentieth-Century America (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2019). Δική της πρωτοβουλία είναι το γνωστό Journal of Early Christian Studies καθώς και δύο πολύ σημαντικές ερευνητικές ομάδες: LASRG (Late Ancient Studies Reading Group) και “Religion, Culture, and Theory”. Ας είναι αιωνία η μνήμη της!
