ΟΑ: Female Authority and Holiness in Early and Medieval Christianity

 Με αφορμή την Παγκόσμια Ημέρα της Γυναίκας, αξίζει να σημειώσουμε την κυκλοφορία σε open access του συλλογικού τόμου Female Authority and Holiness in Early and Medieval Christianity (επιμ. Maria Dell’Isola, De Gruyter, 2025). Αν και ο τόμος δεν περιορίζεται αποκλειστικά στην πρώιμη χριστιανοσύνη, περιλαμβάνει σημαντικές μελέτες για τη γυναικεία αυθεντία, το μαρτύριο, την προφητεία και την αγιότητα στους πρώτους χριστιανικούς αιώνες, καθώς και για τη μετέπειτα πρόσληψη αυτών των μορφών και προτύπων. Πρόκειται για μια χρήσιμη αφετηρία για όποιον ή όποια ενδιαφέρεται για τη θέση των γυναικών στην ιστορία του χριστιανισμού και για τους τρόπους με τους οποίους συγκροτήθηκαν, αμφισβητήθηκαν ή νομιμοποιήθηκαν οι γυναικείες μορφές θρησκευτικής αυθεντίας.

Το ζήτημα της γυναικείας αυθεντίας δεν ανήκει μόνο στο παρελθόν· παραμένει ανοιχτό και αμφιλεγόμενο στις χριστιανικές εκκλησίες μέχρι σήμερα. Γι’ αυτό και τόμοι σαν αυτόν έχουν σημασία που υπερβαίνει τα όρια της ακαδημαϊκής έρευνας.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, it is worth noting the publication in open access of the collective volume Female Authority and Holiness in Early and Medieval Christianity (ed. Maria Dell’Isola, De Gruyter, 2025). Although the volume is not limited exclusively to early Christianity, it includes important studies on female authority, martyrdom, prophecy, and holiness in the first Christian centuries, as well as on the later reception of these figures and models. It offers a useful point of departure for anyone interested in the place of women in the history of Christianity and in the ways female forms of religious authority were constructed, contested, or legitimized.

The question of female authority belongs not only to the past; it remains open and controversial in Christian churches to this day. For this reason, volumes such as this one have a significance that goes beyond the boundaries of academic research.
