 Η Marie N. Pareja (University of Pennsylvania) συζητά τις απεικονίσεις πιθήκων στις τοιχογραφίες από
το Ακρωτήρι της Θήρας. Υποστηρίζει ότι πρόκειται για ένας είδος βαβουΐνων που απαντά στην Ινδία.  Η παλαιότερη έρευνα υποστήριξε ότι οι πίθηκοι ήταν γνωστοί στη Θήρα από την Αίγυπτο, νεότερες όμως μελέτες δείχνουν ως πιο πιθανή την Ινδία ως τόπο προέλευσης. Εάν αυτή η υπόθεση ισχύει, τότε οι τοιχογραφίες στο Ακρωτήρι παρέχουν έμμεση απόδειξη των επαφών των κατοίκων του Αιγαίου με την Ινδία κατά την Εποχή του Χαλκού:
