Οι 50 μελέτες που συγκεντρώθηκαν σε αυτόν τον τόμο αντιπροσωπεύουν τα κυριότερα θέματα με τα οποία ασχολήθηκε ο καθ. Quispel στη διάρκεια της ακαδημαϊκής του καριέρας: τα κείμενα της βιβλιοθήκη του Nag Hammadi γενικά και το Ευαγγέλιο του Θωμάς ειδικότερα, το Διά τεσσάρων του Τατιανού και τις επιρροές του, το Corpus Hermeticum, το Μανιχαϊσμό, τις ιουδαϊκές καταβολές του Γνωστικισμού, το Γνωστικισμό και το μέλλον του Χριστιανισμού. Σε αυτόν τον τόμο δημοσιεύονται και μία σειρά λιγότερο γνωστών παλαιότερων κειμένων του Quispel (στο τμήμα ‘Catholica’).
Μέχρι λίγο πριν το θάνατό του ο καθηγ. Quispel συμμετείχε ενεργά στην έρευνα του Ευαγγελίου του Θωμά. Ήταν ο πρώτος που είδε το κοπτικό κείμενο του συγκεκριμένου ευαγγελίου, το οποίο στη συνέχεια εξέδωσε και μετέφρασε αρχικά στα 1959 και στη συνέχεια στα 2005. Ασχολήθηκε επίσης με το Διά τεσσάρων και τον

γνωστικό Βαλεντίνο. Μία από τις πιο πρόσφατες μελέτες του, που δημοσιεύεται στον τόμο, είναι ‘Τhe Muslim Jesus.’
