 Μπορεί το βιβλίο του Έσδρα να ασκεί κριτική στους μεικτούς γάμους των Ισραηλιτών που έμειναν πίσω στην Παλαιστίνη κατά τη Βαβυλώνια Αιχμαλωσία, στην πραγματικότητα όμως βαβυλωνιακές πηγές μαρτυρούν ότι τέτοιοι μεικτοί γάμοι ήταν συνηθισμένοι μεταξύ των Ιουδαίων εξορίστων στη Βαβυλώνα. Η Laurie Pearce (Berkeley, UC) σχολιάζει το κείμενο του Έσδρα και το αντιπαραβάλλει προς τις βαβυλωνιακές μαρτυρίες:
