Σύμφωνα με τον συγγραφέα η ιστορία του Ιεροβοάμ προηγείται όσον αφορά τη σύνταξή της. Η ιστορία όμως με τους Ισραηλίτες στην έρημο εντάσσεται μέσα στο βιβλίο της Εξόδου ως ένα παράδειγμα της δύναμης που έχει ο Θεός να ξεπερνά την ανθρώπινη αφερεγγυότητα κι αφήνει μία ελπίδα για τη συγχώρηση και την αποκατάσταση του Βόρειο Βασιλείου του Ισραήλ:
