Smith. Διετέλεσε καθηγητής στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Chicago και υπήρξε μέλος της American Academy of Arts and Sciences και πρόεδρος της SBL. Το έργο του συνέβαλε ουσιαστικά στον επαναπροσδιορισμό του τρόπου κατανόησης της θρησκείας και ειδικότερα των θρησκευτικών φαινομένων του ελληνορωμαϊκού κόσμου. Σημαντικές μελέτες του:

H πέμπτη χρονιά εργασιών της Εφορείας Εναλίων Αρχαιοτήτων και του Ινστιτούτου της Δανίας στην Αθήνα έφερε στο φως σημαντικά ευρήματα του αρχαίου λιμένα του Λεχαίου, σημαντικού λιμανιού της αρχαίας Κορίνθου. Οι μέχρι τώρα εργασίες έφεραν στο φως ενδιαφέροντα ευρήματα, τα οποία παρέχουν σημαντικές πληροφορίες για την αρχιτεκτονική και την ιστορία του Λεχαίου.
