Σύμφωνα με μία αμερικανοτουρκική μελέτη περιβαλλοντικοί και δημογραφικοί παράγοντες φαίνονται να ευθύνονται για το αφανισμό του ασσυριακού κράτους. Ξηρασίες και μετακινήσεις πληθυσμών από γειτονικές περιοχές οδήγησαν τελικά στην αποσταθεροποίηση της ασσυριακής αυτοκρατορίας κατά τον 6ο αι. π.Χ.
