Frederick W. Danker (1920 - +2012)

Από το ιστολόγιο Evangelical Textual Criticism πληροφορηθήκαμε το θλιβερό νέο της εκδημίας του γνωστού καθηγητή της Καινής Διαθήκης Frederick W. Danker (1920-2012).O Danker διετέλεσε καθηγητής της Κ.Δ. στο Concordia Seminary, Christ Seminary-Seminex και στη Lutheran School of Theology του Chicago, μέχρι τη συνταξιοδότησή του στα 1988. Θεωρείται κορυφή στο χώρο της λεξοκογαφίας της Καινής Διαθήκης. Σημαντικότερο έργο του είναι το A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature. 3d ed., Chicago/London: University of Chicago Press, 2000, γνωστό και ως BDAG.  To τελευταίο του έργο είναι μία συντομότερη εκδοχή αυτού του λεξικού, το Concise Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament (2009). Σημαντικό ωστόσο έργο, αν και δεν αναφέρεται συχνά, είναι το Benefactor: Epigraphic Study of a Graeco-Roman and New Testament Semantic Field (1982).

Το πρόβλημα της Q / The problem with Q

Στην ιστοσελίδα The Bible and Interpretation δημοσιεύεται το κείμενο του Daniel A. Smith (Huron University College, London Ontario) σχετικά με την πηγή των Λογίων (Q) και τα προβλήματα που συνδέονται με αυτήν την υπόθεση εργασίας όσον αφορά στη σύνταξη των συνοπτικών ευαγγελίων.

Ο Smith εκθέτει τα ιδιαίτερα προβλήματα και τονίζει τον υποθετικό χαρακτήρα της Πηγής. Tονίζει ωστόσο ότι κι η άρνηση της Πηγής έχει τον ίδιο υποθετικό χαρακτήρα. Επιπλέον ο Smith φαίνεται να υιοθετεί την άποψη ότι η Πηγή συνδέεται με κάποια χριστιανική ομάδα, η οποία δεν τονίζει τον σωτηριώδη χαρακτήρα της θυσίας του Ιησού και δεν θέτει στο κέντρο της πίστης της την ανάσταση του Ιησού.

[Α.Τ.: Οι θέσεις του Smith είναι ενδιαφέρουσες, αν και γνωστές. Ιδιαίτερα εύστοχη είναι η παρατήρησή του ότι ένας από τους σοβαρούς λόγους που αυτές οι θέσεις δεν γίνονται δεκτές είναι το γεγονός ότι αλλάζει κατά πολύ τις δεδομένες αντιλήψεις που έχουμε για τον αρχέγονο Χριστιανισμό κι ότι οπωσδήποτε όσα λέγονται κι από τις δύο πλευρές στηρίζονται κυρίως στις υποθέσεις. Αυτός ωστόσο ο υποθετικός χαρακτήρας της Πηγής είναι εκείνος, που νομίζω ότι θα έπρεπε να μας κάνει προσεκτικούς στα συμπεράσματα που συνάγουμε. Παρά τη βεβαιότητα του Smith ότι γνωρίζουμε πού άρχιζε και τέλειωνε η Πηγή, αυτό δεν είναι και τόσο βέβαιο. Πώς μπορούμε να γνωρίζουμε ότι κάποιο από το ιδιαίτερο υλικό των Μτ και Λκ δεν προέρχεται από την Q; Έπειτα ό,τι δεν αναφέρεται ρητά σε ένα κείμενο, δε σημαίνει κατ΄ ανάγκη ότι δεν προϋποτίθεται. Τέλος, δεν πρέπει να ξεχνούμε τον ιδιαίτερο χαρακτήρα της Πηγής (λόγια του Ιησού) καθώς και τα νέα συμπεράσματα που προκύπτουν από τις μελέτες για την προφορικότητα κτλ, κάτι που βάζει στη συζήτηση για τη σύνταξη των συνοπτικών κι άλλους παράγοντες πέρα από την Πηγή.]

EABS/SBL Last Call of Papers (Amsterdam July 2012)

Στις 1 Φεβρουαρίου τελειώνει η προθεσμία για την υποβολή περιλήψεων και αιτήσεων συμμετοχής με εισήγηση στην ερευνητική μου ομάδα "Graeco-Roman Society and the New Testament" στην European Association of Biblical Studies. Φέτος το συνέδριο της εταιρίας διοργανώνεται από κοινού με την SBL στο Άμστερνταμ (22-26 Ιουλίου):

Description: The research group will focus a) on various aspects of the social life of the Graeco-Roman world (e.g. household networks and religion, kinship, friendship and other relationships, slavery, prostitution, social and geographical mobility, social groups, everyday life in Graeco-Roman cities etc.) that consist part of the socio-historical context of the New Testament texts and could therefore provide insight into them, and b) on artifacts from the Graeco-Roman world (e.g. inscriptions, papyri and archeological findings) that can shed light to various aspects of the New Testament texts and events.

Call for papers: Papers that present interdisciplinary approaches to the topics under discussion and offer new insights and interpretations of New Testament texts placing them within their socio-historical context are welcome.

Two sessions are scheduled for the meeting of 2012 in Amsterdam:

• an open session where papers on any topic within the range of the interests of the research group as described above are welcome
• a session focused on “Inscriptions and the New Testament”. Inscriptions have always provided useful evidence not only for understanding the New Testament vocabulary but also for illuminating events and situations described or implied in the New Testament texts. The ever growing epigraphic data provides the biblical scholarly research with a valuable pool of information that can be used through interdisciplinary readings in reconstructing the socio-historical context of the NT texts and the early Christian communities.

Therefore, papers that deal a) with methodological issues regarding the constructive use of the epigraphic data in the NT exegesis, b) with the evaluation of the work done in this field by previous scholars (e.g. A. Deissmann, R. Horsley etc), c) with particular cases of utilization of the epigraphic data in the lexicographical research of the NT, and d) with the use of the inscriptions in illuminating the social, political or religious background of the NT, are welcome.
