Ο διάβολος στον Codex Gigas

O Ιησούς Χριστός εν δόξη - Stavelot Bible

Όλα τα αρχαία χειρόγραφα της Καινής Διαθήκης δεν ήταν μικρά και εύχρηστα. Κάποια από αυτά ήταν μεγάλων διαστάσεων, όπως τα δύο χειρόγραφα, η Βίβλος Stavelot (1097) και o Codex Gigas (1295) και φαίνεται πως αποτελούσαν τα κύρια λειτουργικά βιβλία των μοναστηριών από τα οποία προέρχονταν. Για τη μεταφορά του πρώτου χρειάζονταν 4 άνθρωποι ενώ για εκείνη του δευτέρου 2. Για τη συγγραφή του χρειάστηκαν ένας μοναχός κάθε φορά και περιέχουν εικονογραφήσεις ιδιαίτερα γνωστές: ο πρώτος τον Ιησού Χριστό εν δόξη κι ο δεύτερος μία μεγάλη απεικόνιση του διαβόλου (η οποία χάρισε στον κώδικα τον τίτλο Βίβλος του Διαβόλου μαζί με τον θρύλο που θέλει ο κώδικας να έχει ετοιμαστεί μέσα σε μια μέρα από έναν μοναχό με τη βοήθεια του διαβόλου):
