CFP: EABS 6th Graduate Symposium

European Association of Biblical Studies
Sixth Graduate Symposium: April 11-13, 2014 in Thessaloniki, Greece

EABS is excited to announce its sixth graduate symposium, which will take place in Thessaloniki on the weekend of April 11-13, 2014.  The symposium, which seeks to engender a  supportive atmosphere for dialogue across a variety of biblical and related studies (OT, NT, DSS, early Christianity, rabbinics, etc.), invites PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers to present on a topic related to their research area.  Participants may format their presentation as they see fit: paper, seminar discussion, workshop session, or another form.

This year we especially encourage you to propose posters! You do not need to send a complete poster as a proposal, although this would be appreciated.

The EABS Graduate Symposium is happy to welcome a few senior scholars, including the EABS president, Professor Reimund Bieringer (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven), who will offer feedback and share their own

experiences in the field.  In addition, we look forward to continuing the tradition of holding a joint session with graduate students from the University of Alberta.

Candidates should submit their abstracts and/or posters of no more than 300 words to students@eabs.net no later than January 15th, 2014. Please mention the preferred format in the abstract (i.e. paper, workshop, pre-circulated paper, discussion etc.). Papers should fit time slots of 20 minutes.

Participants have to be members of the EABS. The one-year membership (from Januay 1st to December 31st ) for 2014 is €10.  You can join EABS here.

+ Birger Gerhardsson (1926-2013)

Στις 25 Δεκεμβρίου 2013 έφυγε από τη ζωή ο γνωστός Σουηδός καθηγητής της Καινής Διαθήκης Birger Gerhardsson. Γεννήθηκε στα 1926 στην πόλη της Vännäs. Σπούδασε θεολογία στην Uppsala κι αναγορεύθηκε διδάκτορας στο ίδιο πανεπιστήμιο στα 1961. Η διατριβή του, με τον τίτλο Memory and Manuscript; Oral Tradition and Written Transmission in Rabbinic Judaism and Early Christianity, αποτέλεσε βιβλίο σταθμό στη μελέτη της προφορικής παράδοσης του αρχέγονου Χριστιανισμού. Από τα 1965 κι έως τα 1992, όταν συνταξιοδοτήθηκε ο Gerhardsson δίδαξε ως καθηγητής της ΚΔ στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Lund. Διετέλεσε πρόεδρος της SNTS στα 1990.

Bασική θέση του Gerhardsson υπήρξε ότι οι πρώτοι Χριστιανοί υιοθέτησαν τους ίδιους μηχανισμούς διατήρησης και διάδοσης της προφορικής παράδοσής τους για τον Ιησού, όπως και οι σύγχρονοί τους ραββίνοι για τις δικές τους παραδόσεις. Η θέση του δέχθηκε κριτική, κυρίως διότι θεωρήθηκε ότι μεταφέρει στην εποχή πριν το 70 μ.Χ. παραδόσεις που είναι μεταγενέστερες (κυρίως μετά το 135 μ.Χ.). Το έργο του όμως αποτέλεσε τη βάση για ερευνητές, όπως Martin Hengel, Richard Bauckham και Samuel Byrskog. 

Αναμφισβήτητα, ο Gerhardsson υπήρξε ένας από τους σπουδαιότερους εξηγητές της γενιάς του και η συμβολή του στην κατανόηση της διατήρησης της προφορικής παράδοσης του αρχέγονου Χριστιανισμού παραμένει μεγάλη ακόμη και σήμερα.

H "στροφή" στις υλικές μαρτυρίες του αρχέγονου Χριστιανισμού / The "material turn" in study of Early Christianity

Ο Larry Hurtado στην ενδιαφέρουσα προχθεσινή του ανάρτηση σχολιάζει την παρατήρηση της Kim Haines-Eitzen ("The Social History of Early Christian Scribes", στη δεύτερη, αναθεωρημένη έκδοση του τόμου The Text of the New Testament in Contemporary Research: Essays on the Status Quaestionis, [ed. B. D. Ehrman & M.W. Holmes]) ότι παρατηρείται μία "στροφή" στη μελέτη των παπύρων και τα χειρογράφων του αρχέγονου Χριστιανισμού ("a ‘material turn’ in the study of early Christianity"). Ο Hurtado κάνει μία σύντομη αναδρομή στις σημαντικότερες παλαιότερες μελέτες (μεταξύ των οποίων και κάποιων δικών του) και καταλήγει:

"It’s encouraging to see younger scholars showing interest in these matters and exploring further lines of research. Perhaps there is a “material turn” evident in the field. But it is also a bit puzzling that so many NT scholars (and aspiring scholars) seem so unaware of the importance of early Christian manuscripts as our earliest extant physical expressions of early Christianity." 

Mία ενδιαφέρουσα παρατήρηση κι ένα ζητούμενο στην καινοδιαθηκική έρευνα. Είναι, πραγματικά, απαραίτητο να δημιουργηθεί μια νέα γενιά ερευνητών του υλικού πολιτισμού (και κυρίως της χειρόγραφης παράδοσης των βιβλικών και λειτουργικών βιβλίων) του αρχέγονου Χριστιανισμού και της αρχαίας Εκκλησίας.
