Από τον εκδοτικό οίκο Mohr Siebeck κυκλοφόρησε ένα συλλογικός τόμος με τις εισηγήσεις που διαβάστηκαν στο συνέδριο που διοργάνωσε το Centre for the Social-Scientific Study of the Bible στο St Mary's University (Twickenham) κατά το έτος 2014 κι είχε ως θέμα την έννοια του κακού στον αρχαίο Ιουδαϊσμό και στον αρχέγονο Χριστιανισμό.

Η προσευχή στα κείμενα του Κουμράν / Prayer in Qumran texts

Στην ηλεκτρονική εφημερίδα του Penn State University έχει αναρτηθεί ένα ενδιαφέρον κείμενο της Cherie Winner σχετικά με την σημασία της προσευχής στην κοινότητα του Κουμράν. Με αφορμή αυτήν την παρουσίαση η συγγραφέας παρουσιάζει συνοπτικά δεδομένα σχετικά με τη μυστηριώδη αυτή κοινότητα και παρέχει πληροφορίες για βασικές πτυχές της σκέψης της ομάδας (λατρεία, αποκαλυπτική κ.ά.)

Λεπτομέρεια του γνωστού μωσαϊκού με τις γυναίκες αθλήτριες από την Villa Romana del Casale (4ος αι. μ.Χ.). Κτίστηκε επάνω στα ερείπια παλαιότερης βίλλας και είναι ένα εντυπωσιακό κτίριο 4.000 τ.μ. με λουτρά, σύμπλεγμα δωματίων ποικίλων χρήσεων και βασιλική. Ένα από τα σημαντικότερα ευρήματα της βίλλας είναι τα πλούσια ψηφιδωτά της κατασκευασμένα κατά πάσα πιθανότητα από τεχνίτες της Β. Αφρικής. Το ψηφιδωτό με τις 10 γυναίκες αθλήτριες ίσως είναι ένα από τα πλέον γνωστά, κυρίως για το ελαφρύ ένδυμα με το οποίο παριστάνονται οι γυναίκες που αθλούνται σε αυτό. Η αρχαία εκδοχή του bikini αποτελούνταν από ένα επάνω μέρος από λινό ύφασμα (strophium ή mamillare), το οποίο αποτελούσε απαραίτητο γυναικείο εσώρουχο. Το κάτω μέρος είναι το γνωστό από τους άνδρες αθλητές subligar ή subligaculum. Το bikini βέβαια ως καλοκαιρινή θαλασσινή ενδυμασία των γυναικών λανσαρίστηκε στα 1946 από τον Γάλλο Louis Réard και πήρε το όνομά του από τα γνωστά για τις ατομικές δοκιμές νησιά Bikini, η ιστορία όμως αυτού του γυναικείου ενδύματος φαίνεται να είναι πολύ αρχαιότερο. Eκτός από το μωσαϊκό της Villa Romana del Casale, έχουν βρεθεί αγάλματα της Αφροδίτης με ανάλογη ενδυμασία (Πομπηία, οικία της Julia Felix) κι υπάρχουν αναφορές σε αυτό σε Ρωμαίους συγγραφείς (Οβίδιο και Μαρτιάλη).

Call for Papers: Second Edition of the Distant Worlds Journal (DWJ)

Dealing with Antiquity: Case Studies and Methodological Considerations in the Ethical Engagement of Ancient Materials 

How should those working in academia deal with ancient materials in a way that is ethically and morally sound? This is an ever-present issue behind the scenes of research across academic disciplines, and one growing ever more relevant in contemporary times. Often the evidence we draw on in researching antiquity does not reach us in a pure and unproblematic form, and we are faced with serious ethical quandaries in the process of research. Problems might occur when excavating or studying human remains, researching archaeological material excavated under difficult political circumstances, or in using manuscripts and other archaeological materials not obtained through modern controlled excavations, thus missing crucial contextual information. 

In this issue of the Distant Worlds Journal, we welcome contributions that address these problems either from a methodological perspective or in the form of case studies. Some possible topics include: the utility of archaeological material obtained from illicit excavations (either politically illegal or looted); the engagement of scholars in the identification, appraisal, and publication of unprovenanced materials; the ethical issues of excavating graveyards or studying human remains; the antiquities market as ‘grey’ in character rather than legal or illegal; concepts of ownership in public and private collections; the problems in the appearance and detection of fakes and forgeries; and, the role of scholars as preservers of cultural heritage, especially in the aftermath of destruction.

Ο αριθμός των βιβλίων στην ΠΔ / The number of the books of the Bible

Στην ιστοσελίδα The Bible and Interpretation η Eva Mroczek έχει αναρτήσει ένα ενδιαφέρον κείμενο σχετικά με τον αριθμό των βιβλίων της ΠΔ, όπως αναφέρονται στον Ιώσηπο, σε εξωβιβλικά ιουδαϊκα κείμενα, στη ραββινική γραμματεία και σε κάποια πατερικά κείμενα. Ο αριθμός που κυριαρχεί είναι ο 22. Η συγγραφέας του άρθρου συζητά τη σημασία που μπορεί να είχε αυτός ο αριθμός για τους Ιουδαίους της αρχαιότητας:

Το σύμπλεγμα των μικρών νησιών των Φούρνων είναι ίσως λίγο γνωστό σε πολλούς. Δεν υπάρχει αμφιβολία ότι ήταν επίσης σχετικά άσημα κατά την αρχαιότητα και δεν αναφέρονται στις αρχαίες πηγές. Η θέση του όμως είναι σημαντική καθώς εκεί συναντώνται δύο σημαντικοί ναυτικοί δρόμοι. Δεν προκαλεί, επομένως, εντύπωση ότι ο βυθός γύρω από αυτά τα νησιά είναι γεμάτος ναυάγια της αρχαιότητας αλλά και νεότερων εποχών. Ωστόσο ακόμη και σε αυτήν την περίπτωση, ο αριθμός των ναυαγίων που έχουν μέχρι σήμερα εντοπιστεί είναι εντυπωσιακός: 22 ναυάγια εντοπίστηκαν στην αρχαιολογική αποστολή της Εφορείας Εναλίων Αρχαιοτήτων το 2015 (αρχαϊκής έως και ύστερης βυζαντινής εποχής) κι άλλα 23 εντοπίστηκαν φέτος στην κοινή αποστολή της Εφορείας Εναλίων Αρχαιοτήτων και του RPM Nautical Foundation (αρχαιϊκής εποχής έως και 19ου αι.). Έτσι ο βυθός των Φούρνων αναδεικνύεται ως ο τόπος όπου είναι συγκεντρωμένος τα περισσότερα ναυάγια στη Μεσόγειο. Τα ευρήματα που ήρθαν στο φως είναι εντυπωσιακά: αμφορείς από την Κω (ελληνιστικής εποχής), ένα ναυάγιο της ύστερης αρχαϊκής / πρώιμης κλασικής περιόδου, ένα ναυάγιο με αμφορείς από την Σινώπη της ρωμαϊκής περιόδου, ένα ναυάγιο με αμφορείς από τη Β. Αφρική της ρωμαϊκής επίσης περιόδου και ένα ναυάγιο με κεραμεικά της πρώιμης χριστιανικής περιόδου.

O αποκαλυπτικός Παύλος / Apocalyptic Paul

Από τον εκδοτικό οίκο Bloomsbury κυκλοφόρησε ένα νέο βιβλίο σχετικά με την αποκαλυπτική ως μίας πτυχής της παύλειας σκέψης και θεολογίας. Ο J. P. Davies εστιάζει το ενδιαφέρον σε τέσσερις επιμέρους θεολογικές περιοχές, στην επιστημολογία, εσχατολογία, κοσμολογία και σωτηριολογία. Παρατηρεί ότι οι προηγούμενες μελέτες είχαν δίκιο, όταν υποστήριζαν ότι η "αποκαλυπτική" είναι μια σημαντική κατηγορία στην κατανόηση του αποστόλου, επισημαίνει όμως τις αδυναμίες και τα αδιέξοδα  των προηγούμενων προσεγγίσεων.
