Tzvi Novick, Charity and Reciprocity: Structures of Benevolence in Rabbinic Literature", 33-52

Στο πρόσφατο βιβλίο του ο Seth Schwartz εξετάζει "την ένταση μεταξύ της ισότιμης αλληλεγγύης και της ανταγωνιστικής ανταπόδοσης" στην ύστερη περίοδο του Δεύτερου Ναού και στο ραβινικό Ιουδαϊσμό. Όπως υπαινίσσεται ο Schwartz στον χαρακτηρισμό του για την ανταπόδοση, αυτή δε συμβαδίζει με την ισοτιμία, γιατί η ανταλλαγή, έξω από τα σύνορα της αγοράς, συνήθως είναι δομημένη ασύμμετρα κι επομένως με βάση τις ιεραρχικές σχέσεις της πατρωνείας και της εξάρτησης. Για τον Schwartz η "φυσική" προδιάθεση του Ιουδαϊσμού, τουλάχιστον όπως αυτή διασώζεται μέσα στην Τορά, είναι προς την ισότιμη αλληλεγγύη.  Για να καταστήσει περιττή την ανάγκη "του δώρου που γεννά εξάρτηση" η Τορά απαιτεί τη μεταφορά πλούτου στους φτωχούς μέσα από την ελεήμονα προσφορά (αφήνοντας μια γωνιά του αγρού αθέριστη κλπ). Η ελεημοσύνη, διαφορετικά από το δώρο δεν γεννά την δέσμευση για ανταπόδοση: "ο φτωχός, όπως και ο ιερέας, δεν χρειάζεται να αισθανθεί ευγνωμοσύνη - τουλάχιστον όχι απέναντι στο δωρητή". Με βάση αυτή την εγγενή προτίμηση προς την αλληλεγγύη, το πρόβλημα του Ιουδαϊσμού της ύστερης αρχαιότητας στην κοινωνία της αρχαίας Μεσογείου, η οποία χαρακτηρίζεται από το σύστημα της πατρωνείας, έγκειται ιδιαίτερα "στο πώς κανείς να συμφιλιώσει την ιουδαϊκή του ταυτότητα με το πρακτικό αναπόφευκτο των κοινωνικών θεσμών που στηρίζονταν στην ανταποδοτική ανταλλαγή".

Το ερώτημα πόσα από τα απόκρυφα ευαγγέλια καταπολεμήθηκαν ή ακόμη καταστράφηκαν προκαλεί συνεχώς ενδιαφέρον σε ειδικούς και μη.  Στο παρόν άρθρο ο συγγραφέας δεν προσπαθεί να δώσει μία πλήρη απάντηση στο ερώτημα, αλλά έχει τον πιο ταπεινό στόχο να αναλύσει τις διάφορες μαρτυρίες - από την αρχαιότητα μέχρι τον Μεσαίωνα - οι οποίες αναφέρονται στο Ευαγγέλιο του Θωμά.  Ο συγγραφέας δεν ασχολείται με τις διάφορες έμμεσες αναφορές ή τις κατά λέξη παραθέσεις του ευαγγελίου, αλλά περιορίζεται σε συζητήσεις του τίτλου του ευαγγελίου. Αφορμή γι' αυτήν την έρευνα δίνει η παρουσία στο τέλος της δεύτερης ομιλίας στον Κώδικα ΙΙ του Nag Hammadi ενός κολοφώνος με το κείμενο "Το ευαγγέλιο σύμφωνα με τον Θωμά". Εξαιτίας του αντιφατικού περιεχομένου αυτού του ευαγγελίου και η επίσης αντιφατική θέση που καταλαμβάνει στις ακαδημαϊκές συζητήσεις των χριστιανικών απαρχών, η πρόσληψη του κατά Θωμάν κατά την αρχαιότητα έχει αποτελέσει αντικείμενο συζήτησης από την ανακάλυψη των χειρογράφων του Nag Hammadi κι εξής.
