Στην ιστοσελίδα The Bible and Interpretation έχει αναρτηθεί το κείμενο του Robert J. Myles σχετικά με το ιδεολογικό υπόβαθρο της αναζήτησης για τον ιστορικό Ιησού. Ο Myles υποστηρίζει ότι ο νεοφιλελευθερισμός ως ένα σύστημα όχι μόνο οικονομικό αλλά και αξιών είναι εκείνος που προσέφερε το κατάλληλο έδαφος για την αναζωπύρωση του ενδιαφέροντος για τον ιστορικό Ιησού κυρίως στην λεγόμενη "Τρίτη Φάση της Αναζήτησης". Να θυμηθούμε ότι ήδη ο Albert Schweitzer ήδη στο κλασικό πλέον έργο του για την έρευνα του ιστορικού Ιησού είχε επισημάνει ότι όλες οι αναζητήσεις και περιγραφές του Ιησού ουσιαστικά ήταν προβολές των ενδιαφερόντων και των κοινωνικών και ιστορικών συνθηκών της εποχής κατά την οποία γράφτηκαν. Το κείμενο του Myles αποτελεί λοιπόν μία επιβεβαίωση αυτής της διαπίστωσης:
