The Star of Bethlehem: Historical and Astronomical Perspectives – A Multi-Disciplinary Colloquium, University of Groningen, October
23rd-24th, 2014http://www.astro.rug.nl/~khan/bethlehem
The University of Groningen is celebrating its 400th Anniversary in 2014. To commemorate that event a special 2-day Colloquium "The Star of Bethlehem: Historical and Astronomical Perspectives", is being held on October 23-24, 2014, in Groningen, The Netherlands. This Colloquium is particularly timely as also 400 years ago, in 1614, Johannes Kepler published his book "De vero anno quo aeternus dei filius humanam naturam in utero benedictae Virginis Mariae assumpsit", on the chronology related to the Star of Bethlehem.
Twenty specialists in the fields of (the history of) astronomy, ancient history, religion, society and culture, will discuss the various aspects of the Star of Bethlehem. Besides the invited specialists there is room for about thirty guest attendants. All will be able to take part in the group discussions which conclude each of the four meeting sessions (chaired by moderators).
It is the purpose of this international Colloquium to engage with recent theories for the Star of Bethlehem, such as those of MichaelMolnar (The Star of Bethlehem - Legacy of the Magi), drawing on the expertise of all relevant related fields of ancient astronomy/astrology and ancient history and religion.
The final papers will be published by Brill Academic Publishers (Leiden/Boston), and will together probably constitute the leading volume on this topic.

Κοινωνική και οικονομική ζωή στην Παλαιστίνη του Δεύτερου Ναού / Social and economic life in Second Temple Palestine
Από τον εκδοτικό οίκο Westminster John Knox Press κυκλοφόρησε το βιβλίο του Samuel L. Adams για την κοινωνική και οικονομική ζωή στην Παλαιστίνη της εποχής του Δεύτερου Ναού.
Samuel L. Adams, Social and Economic Life in Second Temple Judea, Westminster John Knox Press 2014
Pages:268$35.00
Description
Those who study the Bible are becoming increasingly attentive to the significance of economics when examining ancient texts and the cultures that produced them. This book looks at the socioeconomic landscape of Second Temple Judea, from the end of the Babylonian exile to the destruction of the temple by the Romans (532 BCE to 70 CE). Adams carefully examines key themes, paying special attention to family life, the status of women, and children, while engaging relevant textual and archaeological evidence. He looks at borrowing and lending and the burdensome taxation policies under a succession of colonial powers. In this pursuit, Adams offers an innovative analysis of economic life with fresh insights from biblical texts. No other study has specifically analyzed economics for this lengthy timeframe, especially in relation to these key themes. This important book provides readers with a helpful context for understanding religious beliefs and practices in the time of early Judaism and emerging Christianity.

Ανακάλυψη φοινικικού πλοίου στη Μεσόγειο / Discovery of a Phoenician ship in the Mediterranean
