Eνώ οι ερευνητές της Κ.Δ. και του ρωμαϊκού της περιβάλλοντος επικεντρώνουν κατά τα τελευταία χρόνια το ενδιαφέρον τους στην εθνικότητα από τη μια και στο κοινωνικό φύλο από την άλλη, τα δύο προβλήματα αντιμετωπίζονται ξεχωριστά και χωρίς καμιά αναφορά στη σύγχρονη κριτική προσέγγιση της θεωρίας για τη φυλή. Στον τόμο συγκεντρώνονται μελέτες γνωστών ερευνητών από το χώρο της Κ.Δ., των κλασικών και των Ιουδαϊκών σπουδών. Οι μελέτες αυτές, στις οποίες υιοθετείται μία διαθεματική προσέγγιση και τίθενται ζητήματα ερμηνευτικής μεθοδολογίας συνδυάζουν τα πορίσματα της μελέτης της φυλής και της εθνικότητας με εκείνα για την Κ.Δ.
