THE THIRD ANNUAL MEETING OF POSTGRADUATES IN THE RECEPTION OF THE ANCIENT WORLD
University of Exeter, 5-6 December 2013

Call for Papers

The AMPRAW2013 committee are pleased to announce the third Annual Meeting of Postgraduates in the Reception of the Ancient World. AMPRAW is a two day residential conference which aims to provide both UK and international postgraduate students, from all disciplines, with the opportunity to present their research on the reception of the ancient world to the thriving classical reception academic community. This year’s conference will be held from Thursday 5th to Friday 6th of December at the University of Exeter’s Streatham Campus.

The central themes of AMPRAW2013 are the reception of the ancient world in film, translation and theatre. Highlights will include:

-Keynote addresses by Professor Edith Hall (King’s College London), Dr Christopher Stray (Swansea), and Professor Maria Wyke (UCL).
-A silent film screening of the 1913 Italian Spartacus, accompanied by Stephen Horne, an internationally renowned silent film accompanist and composer.
-A classical reception themed dramatic performance followed by a question and answer session with the actors and director.
-An interactive exhibition on the history of classical reception in cinema hosted by The Bill Douglas Centre for the History of Cinema and Popular Culture.
-A discursive workshop on classical reception and translation.
-An opportunity to relax and socialise at the conference dinner in the historic and beautiful city centre of Exeter.

We welcome postgraduate students from all disciplines to submit proposals for papers (twenty minutes long followed by discussion). We will consider proposals on any aspect of the reception of the ancient world whilst topics relating to the conference’s central themes are especially invited. Proposals for coordinated panels of up to three papers are also very welcome.
