CALL FOR PAPERS

War and Peace in Jewish Tradition: An Interdisciplinary Conference

An international conference on "War and Peace in Jewish Tradition" will be held at Beit Morasha in Talpiyot, Jerusalem on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 (the week before the World Congress of Jewish Studies).

The conference will deal with questions relating to war and peace in Jewish thought, historiography, Halakhah, art and society from the Biblical period through modern times, utilizing various methodologies: historical, textual, archaeological, sociological and philosophical.Lectures will be given in English and in Hebrew.

We are considering inviting the participants to submit their papers for review and publication in an edited collection of essays.Scholars who wish to present papers are invited to send a 300 word abstract to the emails listed below no later than April 30, 2009.

Στο ηλεκτρονικό τεύχος του Journal of Hebrew Scriptures 9 (2009) δημοσιεύεται το ακόλουθο άρθρο:

Rachelle Gilmour, "Suspense and Anticipation in 1 Samuel 9:1–14"

Το 1 Σαμ 9,1-10,16 έχει αποτελέσει αντικείμενο έντονης συζήτησης από απόψεως φιλολογικής κριτικής. Οι ερμηνευτές "παλεύουν" με τη ξαφνική εμφάνιση του προφήτη Σαμουήλ σε ένα λαϊκό παραμύθι για τον Σαούλ που αναζητούσε τα χαμένα γαϊδούριά του. Στις διάφορες λογοτεχνικές προσεγγίσεις του κειμένου προτάθηκε ως λύση η εμφάνιση του Σαμουήλ στην ιστορία να θεωρηθεί ένα λογοτεχνικό τέχνασμα που σκοπό έχει να προκαλέσει την έκπληξη του αναγνώστη. Στο άρθρο καταδεικνύεται ότι η είσοδος του Σαμουήλ στην αφήγηση δεν είναι απομονωμένο γεγονός αλλά η κορύφωση της έντασης και της προσδοκίας που συσσωρεύθηκαν μέσα σε όλην την ενότητα 1 Σαμ 9,1-14. Αυτή η αγωνία παράγεται μέσα από μία σειρά από επεισόδια, όπου το καθένα απαρτίζεται από ένα μοτίβο προσδοκίας, καθυστέρησης και επίλυσης. Η αναγνώριση αυτής της δομής έντασης επιτρέπει την επανερμηνεία δύο αφύσικων στίχων: τον κατάλογο των ονομάτων στο 9,4 και την αναθεωρητική προσθήκη στο 9,9.
