Στη σελίδα του BBC news δημοσιεύθηκε η είδηση για έναν πάπυρο του 6ου αι. όπου γίνεται αναφορά στο Μυστικό Δείπνο και χρησιμοποιούνται χωρία από το κατά Ματθαίον και τους Ψαλμούς σε μία μαγική συνάφεια. Ο πάπυρος εντοπίστηκε στη βιβλιοθήκη John Rylands (Manchester) από την Δρ. Roberta Mazza, η οποία εκτιμά ότι το κείμενο βρισκόταν μέσα σε φυλακτήριο, μια πρακτική που προφανώς οι χριστιανοί της Αιγύπτου παρέλαβαν από τους εθνικούς γείτονές τους. Στο πίσω μέρος είναι γραμμένη απόδειξη για σιτηρά. Ο πάπυρος αρχικά πρέπει να ανήκε σε κάποιο χωρικό της περιοχής της Ερμούπολης. Σύμφωνα με την Μazza πρόκειται για το πρώτο μαγικό κείμενο που κάνει λόγο για την Ευχαριστία, την οποία ονομάζει το "μάννα της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης". Τα βιβλικά κείμενα που παρατίθενται έχουν πολλά λάθη, κάτι που οδηγεί στο συμπέρασμα ότι ο συγγραφέας του παπύρου τα έγραψε από μνήμης.

Singleness is not only a new and rapidly increasing lifestyle of the present day. It has also become a fashionable field of research in social history. During a series of sessions at the European Social Science History Conference (Glasgow, 2012), questions were raised about the structural and cultural particularities of ‘single life’ in cities. A conference at the University of Antwerp (Singles in the Cities of North-West Europe, c. 1000–2000) in March 2013 further expanded upon the insights from the Glasgow conference.

In this new field of research the silence of ancient historians is striking. This may be partly explained by the lack of demographical data: there are virtually no statistics or censuses to indicate how many men or women were single in the towns and villages of the Roman Empire. But far more problematic is the definition of singleness. In a society which did not yet know the Christian concept of marriage, in an environment where both the contracting of a marriage and divorce were quick and easy, the lines between married and unmarried were somewhat vague. This may explain why there is no proper or much-used Latin or ancient Greek word to denote the status of a bachelor or spinster. We might even raise the question whether singleness for the ancient period could possible be defined as being unmarried. But even without the criterion of marriage, other approaches towards singleness in antiquity are possible.

Since this is the first ever conference on the theme, and with the aim of publishing a volume which will set the course for further research, we are inviting papers from a wide chronological and thematic range, incorporating the methods and questions historians of other periods use, to consider these questions:

(1) The possibility of some demographic insight into singleness and the way it was distributed (widows, unmarried, divorced, orphan).

(2) The difference between the urban and rural environment.

(3) Gendered aspects of the issue.

(4) Social and economic drawbacks or incentives for single persons.

(5) Social networks and the possibility of a subculture of singles.

(6) Juridical consequences of singleness.

(7) Funerary commemoration and representation of singleness.

(8) The impact of Christianity.

Confirmed speakers include (apart from the organizers Laes and Huebner) Anna Boozer (New York), Ville Vuolanto (Tampere/Oslo), Kyle Harper (Oklahoma), Judith Evans Grubbs (Emory), and Hanne Sigismund Nielsen (Calgary).

The conference organizers welcome abstracts of about 300 words on ‘Singles and the Single Life in the Roman and Later Roman World’ based on analysis of literary, documentary, archaeological, and iconographic evidence. Papers should be 20 minutes in length, with 10 minutes of discussion time allowed after each individual paper, and should be read in English. We encourage junior researchers and recent PhD holders to apply as well.

Μολονότι στην Ελλάδα έχουμε συνηθίσει στη λογική ακαδημαϊκών και επιστημονικών περιοδικών, τα οποία φιλοξενούν κατά κύριο λόγο (για να μην πω αποκλειστικά) μελέτες διδακτόρων και ακαδημαϊκών δασκάλων, στο εξωτερικό τα πράγματα είναι διαφορετικά. Έτσι στο Bigham Young University εκδίδεται ηλεκτρονικά το φοιτητικό περιοδικό Studia Antiqua. A Student Journal for the Study of the Ancient World. Στο τρέχον τεύχος του περιοδικού μάλιστα δημοσιεύονται τρία άρθρα με βιβλικό ενδιαφέρον και εξαιρετική ποιότητα. Θα πρέπει κάποτε να σκεφτούμε τέτοιους τρόπους ακαδημαϊκής έκφρασης για τους φοιτητές μας (για να μην αναφέρω εδώ την εκπαιδευτική χρησιμότητα ενός τέτοιου περιοδικού) και να ξεφύγουμε από τις λογικές ενός ακαδημαϊκού λόγου και διαλόγου που περιορίζεται μόνο στο επίπεδο των πανεπιστημιακών δασκάλων ή έστω και στον ευρύτερο κύκλο μόνο των διδακτόρων.

Ο συγγραφέας διαπιστώνει συγγένεια της δομής της επιστολής με τα κείμενα των τελευταίων. Μέσα σε αυτήν τη συνάφεια αξιοποιεί την αθλητική γλώσσα της εποχής του για να αναδείξει τον σκοπό της χριστιανικής ζωής. The Star of Bethlehem: Historical and Astronomical Perspectives – A Multi-Disciplinary Colloquium, University of Groningen, October

The University of Groningen is celebrating its 400th Anniversary in 2014. To commemorate that event a special 2-day Colloquium "The Star of Bethlehem: Historical and Astronomical Perspectives", is being held on October 23-24, 2014, in Groningen, The Netherlands. This Colloquium is particularly timely as also 400 years ago, in 1614, Johannes Kepler published his book "De vero anno quo aeternus dei filius humanam naturam in utero benedictae Virginis Mariae assumpsit", on the chronology related to the Star of Bethlehem.

Twenty specialists in the fields of (the history of) astronomy, ancient history, religion, society and culture, will discuss the various aspects of the Star of Bethlehem. Besides the invited specialists there is room for about thirty guest attendants. All will be able to take part in the group discussions which conclude each of the four meeting sessions (chaired by moderators).

It is the purpose of this international Colloquium to engage with recent theories for the Star of Bethlehem, such as those of MichaelMolnar (The Star of Bethlehem - Legacy of the Magi), drawing on the expertise of all relevant related fields of ancient astronomy/astrology and ancient history and religion.

The final papers will be published by Brill Academic Publishers (Leiden/Boston), and will together probably constitute the leading volume on this topic.

Σύμφωνα με δημοσίευμα της ηλεκτρονικής έκδοσης της The Art Newspaper εντοπίστηκαν ανοικτά του νησιού Gozo της Μάλτας ίχνη ενός φοινικικού πλοίου, το οποίο εκτιμάται ότι είναι το αρχαιότερο που έχει βρεθεί στην Μεσόγειο και σε τόσο καλή κατάσταση. Σύμφωνα με το δημοσίευμα οι αρχαιολόγοι έφεραν στο φως μέρος του φορτίου του πλοίου: 20 μυλόπετρες και 50 αμφορείς. Χρονολογούνται στο 700 π.Χ. όταν η Μάλτα ήταν μία περιοχή εποικισμένη από Φοίνικες.

"Most manumission inscriptions come from relatively small communities in central and northern Greece, like Chyretiai, Hypata and Leukopetra. The need to publicise manumission acts cannot therefore sufficiently account for manumission inscriptions. Any account of manumission inscriptions must explain why they are overwhelmingly absent from large urban communities with strong and diversified epigraphic habits, where the problems of publication would be particularly acute, and why they are present where they are. In other words, we need to understand the epigraphic habit, as well as the social dynamics of those communities that set up manumission inscriptions. Answering the question that Zelnick-Abramovitz raises, would involve a number of case-studies of local communities and their epigraphic habits; this important desideratum is perhaps the greatest gap in our knowledge and understanding of post-classical Greek history. This slim but informative volume is a welcome addition towards that end."
